淳于长 / Chunyu Zhang (Western Han)

Overview
淳于长 / Chunyu Zhang enters the wiki as the Chengdi-era favorite whose fall creates the immediate prehistory for 王莽’s 8 BCE ascent in Hanji 558. Hanji 557 supplies the actual collapse sequence: Wang Mang denounces him through Wang-family channels, Chengdi first dismisses him, but Chunyu Zhang’s attempt to regain office through 王立 leads to renewed investigation and death in prison.
Current Profile
Hanji 557 presents Chunyu Zhang as politically exposed in three stages. First, Wang Mang tells the ill 王根 that Chunyu Zhang is pleased by Wang Gen’s illness and expects to replace him in assisting government. Wang Gen sends Wang Mang to 王政君, and the accusation then reaches 汉成帝.
Second, Chengdi’s initial punishment is limited. Because Chunyu Zhang is still tied to the dowager’s kin network and had helped 赵飞燕, Chengdi removes him from office but does not immediately kill him.
Third, Chunyu Zhang fails the exit test. Before returning to his fief, he gives valuables through Wang Li’s son Wang Rong in the hope that Wang Li will speak for him. The suspicious reversal of Wang Li’s attitude prompts investigation; Wang Rong’s suicide and Chunyu Zhang’s confession about insulting 废后许氏 and promising to make her left empress raise the case to grave disloyalty. He dies in prison, while his wife and children are exiled to Hepu and his mother is sent back to her original commandery.
