Diego (Drake Ally)

Diego appears in 693. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: England’s Greatest Hero (Part 3) as an African man enslaved by the Spanish who defects to Francis Drake during the Nombre de Dios raid. The episode presents him as a close ally who introduces Drake to the Cimarrones, escaped African fighters in Panama.

Diego makes the source’s moral contradiction concrete. Drake had participated in slaving with John Hawkins, yet his most important Panama alliance depends on an escaped enslaved man and on black military partners who want revenge on Spain.

The source later places Diego on the 1577 expedition with Drake. After Indigenous islanders off Chile mistake the English for Spanish, both Drake and Diego are wounded, and Diego later dies.
