Hanji 989 adds Dong Cheng before the river-flight crisis. He receives title recognition, is alerted to 郭汜’s westward coercion plan, helps move 汉献帝 toward 杨奉’s camp after the Xinfeng fire, and then participates in the politically charged suspicion around 段煨 at 华阴.
Hanji 990 backfills Dong Cheng’s pre-escort alignment before the Hanji 991 river-flight crisis. He joins 杨定 and 杨奉 in trying to obtain an imperial order against 段煨, then participates in the failed attack after 汉献帝 refuses to treat Duan Wei as a rebel.
Hanji 991 supplies Dong Cheng’s emergency escort role before the Luoyang-return branch. After 李傕, 郭汜, and 张济 press 汉献帝 around Hongnong, Dong Cheng works with 杨奉 to summon 白波军 and 南匈奴 reinforcements, then helps shield the night river crossing with quilts after Li Jue’s scouts notice the escape.

Hanji 1000 places Dong Cheng in the ruined 洛阳 court after 张杨 and 杨奉 leave. Alongside 韩暹, he remains near 汉献帝 and helps guard the court, creating the immediate power environment that later makes his appeal to 曹操 consequential.
董承 / Dong Cheng (late Han) is further developed in Hanji 1003 as a court-side actor whose position changes around Cao Cao’s first approach to Emperor Xian. The source says Dong Cheng initially blocks 曹洪 when Cao Cao sends him to receive the emperor, so Cao Hong does not reach Luoyang.
The episode then turns Dong Cheng into the legitimacy channel for Cao Cao’s march. As 韩暹 becomes overbearing, Dong Cheng privately asks Cao Cao for help. That request gives Cao Cao an overt reason to move from Xu toward 洛阳 and intervene in the court.
