窦穆 / Dou Mu (Eastern Han)
Updated · 1 episodes · 1 show · 1 source notes
Overview
窦穆 / Dou Mu is the Dou-family son in Hanji 736 whose false use of dowager authority turns marriage alliance into a court-punished abuse of status. His page is bounded to the early Mingdi-era Dou-family branch and is not a full synthesis of later Dou-family power.
Current Profile
Hanji 736 identifies Dou Mu as Dou Rong’s eldest son and the husband of Neihuang Princess. His central act is to falsely invoke Yin Taihou’s command in order to make Liu Xu of Liu’an divorce his original wife and marry Dou Mu’s daughter.
The wife’s family reports the coercion to court. Mingdi is angry, removes Dou Mu and his brothers from office, and sends the Dou relatives who hold office back to their original commandery with their households. The source stresses that only Dou Rong remains in the capital, treating Dou Rong’s standing as the reason the first punishment is not harsher.
Dou Mu’s later fate is worse. After Dou Rong dies, Dou Mu and his sons Dou Xun and Dou Xuan are accused again, imprisoned, and executed. The page therefore treats Dou Mu as an early case of private family ambition borrowing imperial command language before elite protection disappears.
Key Characteristics
- Dou Rong’s eldest son and Neihuang Princess’s husband in Hanji 736.
- Uses a false dowager command to coerce a royal-marriage rearrangement.
- Turns family alliance ambition into a public court offense.
- Receives initial office removal and forced return rather than immediate execution.
- Later dies in prison with his sons after renewed accusations.
Evidence
- Family and status: Hanji 736 identifies Dou Mu as Dou Rong’s eldest son and Neihuang Princess’s husband.
- Forged authority: Hanji 736 says Dou Mu falsely transmits Yin Taihou’s will to make Liu Xu divorce his wife and marry Dou Mu’s daughter.
- First punishment: Hanji 736 says Mingdi removes Dou Mu and his brothers from office and sends the officeholding Dou relatives home.
- Later execution: Hanji 736 says Dou Mu, Dou Xun, and Dou Xuan are later accused, imprisoned, and executed after Dou Rong’s death.
Qualifications
This page does not create separate canonical pages for Liu Xu, Neihuang Princess, Dou Xun, or Dou Xuan because Hanji 736 uses them as participants in Dou Mu’s case rather than as independently developed subjects. The false-order incident is related to forged-edict abuse but is narrower than public-resource extraction.
What Changed
- Created the Dou Mu page from Hanji 736’s forged-dowager-authority marriage case.
- Preserved his later execution as a consequence layer without reconstructing the full later charge record.
Relationships
- 窦融 - father whose prestige initially limits punishment.
- 汉明帝 - ruler who punishes Dou Mu’s first exposed abuse.
- 阴丽华 - dowager whose authority Dou Mu falsely invokes.
- 伪诏营私 - related forged-authority mechanism, though Dou Mu’s case coerces marriage rather than extracting construction resources.
- 权力欲自律 - related power-discipline concept because family status is used for private alliance pressure.
