段熲 / Duan Jiong (late Han)

Hanji 915 directly narrates Duan Jiong’s fall before Hanji 917 memorializes his service record. The episode places him as an ally of 王甫 and 曹节, then has him self-impeach after an eclipse before 阳球 accuses him with Wang Fu and Wang Fu’s family network.

Duan dies by suicide after the arrest. In this episode he is less a pure merit-victim than a punished old commander caught inside the anti-eunuch prosecution field, which later allows 吕强 to turn his treatment into evidence of broken reward and punishment.

Hanji 917 backfills 段熲 / Duan Jiong as an older late-Han frontier commander whose merit does not protect his family from court-political damage. 吕强’s memorial says Duan had served two emperors, held high office, and had major border merit, but was pulled into the prosecution field after 阳球 destroyed 王甫.

The episode uses Duan Jiong as a second warning beside 蔡邕. A court that lets corrective speakers and meritorious commanders be punished teaches silence and fear, turning merit records into weak protection once palace politics controls interpretation.
