Overview

段禧 / Duan Xi enters the wiki as the Western Regions protector appointed after Ren Shang is removed for misgoverning the Western Regions, with Hanji 778 and Hanji 779 both placing him inside the Qiuci relocation-and-withdrawal crisis.

Current Profile

Hanji 779 gives Duan Xi a narrow but important role in the 107 CE Western Regions collapse. Ren Shang’s harsh approach triggers rebellion and an attack on the protectorate position at Shule. After Ren temporarily defeats Pan Tuo but loses court confidence, the Deng regency removes him and appoints Duan Xi as the new protector.

Duan Xi’s tenure is immediately constrained by the inherited crisis. Together with Liang Jin, he moves the protectorate seat to Qiuci, a still pro-Han polity under the king Ba Ba. The relocation provokes Qiuci nobles and their Gumo and Wensu allies. Liang Jin wins the emergency battle, but the court soon recalls Duan Xi, Liang Jin, Zhao Bo, and the tuntian troops as part of the decision to abandon the Western Regions.

Hanji 778 backfills this sequence as part of Empress Dowager Deng’s initial regency burden. Duan Xi therefore marks the limit of replacement appointment: changing the protector can stabilize the office briefly, but it cannot by itself repair local rebellion, regional alliance pressure, and central withdrawal logic.

Key Characteristics

  • Replacement protector appointed after Ren Shang’s governance failure.
  • Crisis manager whose office begins after local trust and regional balance have already been damaged.
  • Linked to the protectorate relocation into Qiuci, which stabilizes access only briefly before provoking local opposition.
  • Politically subordinate to the Deng court’s final cost decision to withdraw from the Western Regions despite temporary Qiuci stabilization.

Evidence

  • Appointment after failure: Hanji 779 records Ren Shang’s removal and Duan Xi’s appointment as the new Western Regions protector.
  • Protectorate relocation: Hanji 779 says Duan Xi and Liang Jin move the protectorate seat to Qiuci.
  • Opening-regency backfill: Hanji 778 places Duan Xi’s Qiuci role inside the frontier pressure facing Deng at the start of regency.
  • Withdrawal endpoint: Hanji 779 says the court recalls Duan Xi with Liang Jin, Zhao Bo, and the farming-garrison troops.

Qualifications

Duan Xi is currently bounded to Hanji 778 and Hanji 779. The page does not infer his earlier career, personal motives, or independent policy views. His importance is institutional: he marks the failed handoff from Ren Shang’s protectorate to the final withdrawal decision.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 778 as a backfilled opening-regency context for Duan Xi’s Qiuci role.
  • Preserved Hanji 779 as the fuller Western Regions protectorate handoff and withdrawal account.
