Overview

杜清 / Du Qing enters the wiki through Hanji 520 as the official who twice advises 王凤 after 王章’s death and the planned impeachment of 冯野王. Hanji 512 backfills an earlier frontier-risk layer: Du Qing advises Wang Feng that continued mediation toward 夜郎王兴 may let a southwestern threat consolidate before Han can respond.

Current Profile

The sources present Du Qing as a risk adviser rather than a one-issue court proceduralist. Hanji 512 shows him weighing frontier timing, geography, cost, and appointment fit: after Ye Lang King Xing rejects mediation and insults Han authority, Du Qing argues that delay may let Xing annex neighboring groups, gather forces, and attack 牂柯郡. His answer is not instant display war, but quiet preparation, grain provisioning, and selection of a capable governor.

Hanji 520 then shows the court-procedural side of the same temperament. In the Feng Yewang case, Du Qing argues that punishment should not be built from uncertain or retroactive rules: if the emperor had approved sick leave and no statute forbade crossing the commandery boundary, the safer state posture is to forgive rather than punish.

His second intervention is broader. Because Wang Zhang’s charge record is secret, Du Qing worries that people will believe Wang Zhang died for speaking directly against Wang Feng. He therefore recommends calling on officials and attendants to speak freely, so the court can show that direct remonstrance remains legitimate. Du Qing’s strength in the episode is this move from individual case handling to system reputation.

Key Characteristics

  • Western Han adviser active in the Wang Feng power field.
  • Diagnoses frontier threats through timing, information distance, supply, and local geography.
  • Supports preventive preparation when mediation may embolden an opponent.
  • Defends Feng Yewang through legal clarity, mercy in doubtful punishment, and non-retroactivity.
  • Reads Wang Zhang’s death as a public-trust crisis because the formal charges are not publicly understood.
  • Recommends reopening speech channels to prove that direct remonstrance is not punishable.
  • Works through Wang Feng rather than directly against him, making advice possible inside concentrated power.

Evidence

  • Frontier timing diagnosis: Hanji 512 says Du Qing warns that Ye Lang King Xing can exploit the distance between Zhangke and Chang’an to annex neighbors and prepare an attack.
  • Preparation and supply: Hanji 512 says Du Qing recommends quiet war readiness in surrounding commanderies and pre-positioned grain.
  • Appointment fit: Hanji 512 says he stresses selecting a capable Zhangke governor for the office.
  • Legal clarity: Hanji 520 says Du Qing argues that Feng Yewang was a two-thousand-stone official on approved sick leave and that existing law did not clearly forbid leaving the commandery.
  • Mercy in doubtful punishment: Hanji 520 says Du Qing invokes the principle of rewarding when reward is doubtful and pardoning when punishment is doubtful.
  • Non-retroactivity: Hanji 520 says Du Qing argues that even if a new rule is made later, Feng Yewang should not be punished for earlier conduct.
  • Public-trust diagnosis: Hanji 520 says Du Qing warns that secret charges against Wang Zhang may make the world think he died for direct speech.
  • Remonstrance repair: Hanji 520 says he recommends ordering frank officials and palace attendants to speak fully, and Chengdi approves after Wang Feng reports the suggestion.

Qualifications

This page is bounded to Hanji 512 and Hanji 520. It does not reconstruct Du Qing’s full office, biography, factional affiliations, or later career. Hanji 512 presents Du Qing’s frontier advice before the visible transcript reaches Chen Li’s execution of Xing, so the page treats the proposed policy, not the later outcome, as the evidenced layer.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 512’s frontier-risk layer: Du Qing weighs mediation, delay, supply, geography, and appointment fit in the Ye Lang crisis.
  • Preserved Hanji 520’s two court-procedural interventions: legal restraint in Feng Yewang’s case and public remonstrance repair after Wang Zhang’s death.

Relationships

  • 王凤 - powerholder Du Qing advises and warns without directly overthrowing his position.
  • 夜郎王兴 - frontier ruler whose rejected mediation triggers Du Qing’s preventive advice.
  • 牂柯郡 - commandery whose distance and vulnerability shape Du Qing’s diagnosis.
  • 冯野王 - official whose impeachment triggers Du Qing’s first letter.
  • 王章 - punished critic whose public interpretation triggers Du Qing’s second letter.
  • 汉成帝 - ruler who approves the speech-opening recommendation after Wang Feng reports it.
  • 君臣反馈失灵 - failure pattern Du Qing tries to prevent by reopening speech.
  • 纳谏转政策式治理 - positive repair logic behind Du Qing’s second proposal.
  • 名分合法性叙事攻击 - adjacent conflict frame because Du Qing understands public interpretation as politically decisive.
  • 治未病式边疆治理 - frontier version of Du Qing’s advice because he wants preparation before Ye Lang consolidates.
