度尚 / Du Shang (late Han)

Overview

度尚 / Du Shang is now a two-sided late-Han commander in the wiki. Hanji 863 gives his earlier 164 CE 荆州 campaign as an incentive-aware but coercive morale case: he burns captured spoils to make soldiers fight 卜阳 and 潘鸿. Hanji 867 later shows useful military service paired with false accusation against 张磐.

Current Profile

Du Shang’s profile is mixed rather than simply heroic or villainous. In Hanji 863, he recruits local Man and Yi troops in Jingzhou, defeats rebels, then faces a morale problem after soldiers become attached to captured treasure. His solution is 战利品损失动员: send troops out hunting, burn the camp stores, frame the loss as recoverable through enemy wealth, and strike the mountain stronghold at dawn.

Hanji 867 then adds the accountability limit. 汉桓帝 recalls Du Shang to 洛阳, appoints him as 中郎将, and sends him south with more than 20,000 troops plus local forces. Du Shang defeats 朱丐 and 胡兰, regains the Jingzhou inspectorate, but later falsely reports that Cangwu bandits entered Jingzhou after 张磐 has already handled Hu Lan’s remnants. Zhang Pan forces a court confrontation, the falsehood is exposed, and the court still spares Du Shang because suppression merit and future usefulness matter.

Key Characteristics

  • Jingzhou pacification commander whose 164 CE campaign depends on local recruitment and mountain pursuit.
  • Incentive-aware leader who recognizes that captured wealth can weaken soldiers’ willingness to keep fighting.
  • Coercive morale manipulator who burns spoils and redirects loss toward enemy wealth.
  • Victory-reward beneficiary whose campaigns bring military honor and renewed provincial authority.
  • False accuser who turns a remaining security problem into a charge against 张磐.
  • Test case for 因功免责, where proven misconduct is softened by military value.

Evidence

  • Jingzhou campaign and local recruitment: Hanji 863 reports Du Shang recruiting Man and Yi soldiers in Jingzhou and defeating a large rebel or bandit group.
  • Spoils-loss tactic: Hanji 863 says Du Shang sends troops out hunting, secretly burns captured treasure, and uses the loss to make soldiers demand an attack on Bu Yang and Pan Hong.
  • Operational success and reward: Hanji 863 says the dawn assault destroys the unprepared stronghold and that Du Shang is enfeoffed as Youxiang hou.
  • Later deployment and victory: Hanji 867 reports Du Shang’s appointment as 中郎将, his southern expedition, his defeat of Zhu Gai and Hu Lan, and his restoration as Jingzhou inspector.
  • False report against Zhang Pan: Hanji 867 states that Du Shang feared blame for not eliminating all rebels and therefore misreported the Cangwu-Jingzhou movement.
  • Failed confrontation and merit shield: Hanji 867 has Du Shang unable to defeat Zhang Pan’s account before Emperor Huan, yet spared because the court still needs pacification talent.

Qualifications

Both source notes use or preserve the transcript form 杜尚; this page normalizes the actor to 度尚 while preserving that variant. Hanji 863 does not provide a full ethics evaluation of the burned-spoils tactic, so the wiki records it as effective coercive motivation rather than an endorsed leadership model. The interval between the 164 CE Jingzhou campaign and the later 165 CE appointment or restoration path remains underdescribed.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 863 as an earlier Du Shang campaign layer before Hanji 867.
  • Recast Du Shang as both a morale-manipulation case and a merit-shielded-accountability case.
  • Added Bu Yang, Pan Hong, and spoils-loss mobilization to Du Shang’s relationship field.

Relationships

  • 汉桓帝 - appoints Du Shang for later southern suppression and spares him after the false accusation is exposed.
  • 荆州 - provincial arena for Du Shang’s 164 campaign and later restored inspectorate.
  • 卜阳 and 潘鸿 - Guiyang bandit leaders defeated after Du Shang remobilizes his troops.
  • 桂阳郡 - commandery setting for the mountain-bandit branch.
  • 战利品损失动员 - concept grounded by Du Shang burning captured goods to restart soldiers’ desire to fight.
  • 朱丐 and 胡兰 - rebel opponents defeated by Du Shang’s later southern campaign.
  • 张磐 - falsely accused official who forces Du Shang into a face-to-face confrontation.
  • 因功免责 - concept modeled by Du Shang’s spared misconduct.
  • 赦免不等于昭雪 - paired legal concept because Du Shang’s accusation is what Zhang Pan refuses to leave unresolved.
