Unlike the part of the royal family exiled to Normandy, Edmund remained in England and built a reputation for courage and battlefield effectiveness. After Æthelred died in April 1016, Edmund claimed the throne and held Wessex while Cnut controlled Northumbria and East Anglia.

Mercia and Eadric Streona’s shifting allegiance shaped the contest. Eadric’s defection at Assandun helped Cnut win; Edmund nevertheless retained enough bargaining power to divide England with him. Edmund’s death on 30 November ended that arrangement and made Cnut sole ruler.
