Overview

汉殇帝 / Emperor Shang of Han is Liu Long, the infant Eastern Han emperor installed by Empress Dowager Deng after Emperor He died in 106 CE. His reign is brief but structurally important because his infancy and mortality make Deng’s succession management, Liu Hu’s retention near the capital, and Emperor An’s installation part of the same regency-security sequence.

Current Profile

Hanji 777, Hanji 778, and Hanji 781 present Emperor Shang primarily as a succession hinge rather than an active ruler. Hanji 777 supplies the clearest accession threshold: Emperor He’s earlier sons have repeatedly died, later princes had been raised outside the palace, Liu Sheng is bypassed because of chronic illness, and Liu Long is made crown prince and emperor while only about one hundred days old. The decision gives Deng immediate regency authority but also exposes the court to the foreseeable risk that an infant emperor may not survive.

The later two Deng-regency notes make Liu Hu’s preparation central. Hanji 778 says Deng keeps Liu Hu and Geng Ji in the capital rather than sending them away, while Hanji 781 says she had already brought Liu Hu into the palace because she worried about Liu Long’s survival. When Emperor Shang dies after a reign of about eight months, Deng can quickly enthrone Liu Hu as Emperor An. Emperor Shang therefore anchors the transition from post-Emperor He uncertainty into Deng’s long regency over An.

Key Characteristics

  • Infant ruler whose accession gives Deng formal regency authority after Emperor He.
  • Chosen from an opaque heir field after later-born princes had been raised outside the palace.
  • Succession choice made against Liu Sheng, who is treated in the source as unsuitable because of chronic illness.
  • Short-lived emperor whose death after about eight months validates Deng’s earlier concern about succession fragility and Liu Hu’s reserve status.
  • Political bridge between Emperor He and Emperor An rather than an independent governing actor in the current evidence.
  • Part of the wider pattern where child accession can stabilize a transition while deepening regency dependence.

Evidence

  • Direct death-and-accession threshold: Hanji 777 records Emperor He’s death, the return of secretly raised princes, Liu Sheng’s illness, Liu Long’s crown-prince appointment, and same-night accession.
  • Infant-regency opening: Hanji 778 frames Deng’s initial regency work around governing for the infant Emperor Shang while preserving Liu Hu near the capital as succession insurance.
  • Accession choice: Hanji 781 says Deng selects the infant Liu Long after Emperor He’s death while sealing Liu Sheng as Pingyuan Wang because of illness.
  • Mortality risk and palace preparation: Hanji 781 says Deng had already brought Liu Hu into the palace because she feared Liu Long would not survive.
  • Succession bridge: Hanji 781 records Liu Long’s death after about eight months and Deng’s quick enthronement of Liu Hu as Emperor An.

Qualifications

The current wiki now has three source notes for Emperor Shang, but all use him mainly as a succession and regency hinge. Hanji 777, Hanji 778, and Hanji 781 give his infancy, mortality risk, and succession function, but not independent policy action, household politics, or later memory. Liu Sheng remains source-scoped here because this ingest does not yet establish a durable standalone page for him.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 777 as the direct death/accession account for Emperor Shang.
  • Added the hidden-fostered-prince background and Liu Sheng contrast as the immediate succession setting.
  • Kept Hanji 778 as a confirming opening layer for Emperor Shang’s infant-regency context and Liu Hu’s reserve position.
  • Preserved Hanji 781 as the fuller succession account for Liu Long’s selection, death, and Emperor An’s installation.
  • Preserved Emperor Shang’s short reign as both a regency-authority source and a succession-fragility test.
