何太后 / Empress Dowager He

Hanji 918 backfills Empress He before the Wang Meiren and succession branches. The episode presents her as 何真’s daughter from a Nanyang butcher household whose palace entry is aided by household resources, whose beauty brings her into 汉灵帝’s favor, and whose birth of 刘辩 turns the He family into an outer-relative power base around 何进 and 何苗.

Hanji 921 adds Empress He before she becomes dowager. After 王美人 gives birth to Liu Xie, later 汉献帝, the episode says Empress He poisons Wang; 汉灵帝 considers deposing He but is dissuaded by eunuch pleading, so He survives with an early debt to the palace-eunuch channel.

This backfill makes Hanji 944’s later explanation of her eunuch dependence more concrete. The He line’s protection is not only a matter of palace habit after Ling’s death; it also rests on an older crisis in which eunuchs helped prevent her removal.

Hanji 943 backfills Empress Dowager He before the eunuch-protection problem in Hanji 944. After 蹇硕 fails to remove 何进, her son 刘辩 / 弘农王 becomes emperor, and she becomes the dowager who handles court affairs from behind the succession.

The same source also gives her first direct clash with the rival Dong line. When 董太后 threatens He Jin through 董重, Empress Dowager He relays the danger to her brother and quickly approves the plan to send Dong Taihou away from the capital. Her early success therefore rests on the same outer-relative power that later makes her vulnerable to eunuch dependence and family-interest pressure.

Hanji 944 explains why Empress Dowager He resists 何进’s first anti-eunuch proposal. The source says she treats palace service as dependent on eunuchs and also carries a debt from the earlier 王美人 episode, when eunuch pleading and payments helped keep 汉灵帝 from deposing her.

The same source makes her decision field familial as well as institutional. 武阳君 and 何苗 are presented as tied to eunuch benefits and warn her that He Jin wants sole power, so the dowager becomes the point where palace dependence, old gratitude, kinship, and fear of He Jin’s ambition block decisive action.

Hanji 945 adds Empress Dowager He’s decision position before the palace killing. 何进 and 袁绍 try to pressure her into authorizing the killing of the 十常侍, and the outside-force summons is meant partly to make that pressure irresistible.

The same source shows her palace-family vulnerability. After dismissing many attendants under pressure, she is moved through 武阳君 and 张让’s family channel to allow the eunuchs back into the palace, setting up the Hanji 946 counterattack.

Hanji 946 adds Empress Dowager He’s role before Dong Zhuo’s later purge. 何进 presses her to authorize killing the palace eunuchs, while 张让 and 段珪 later seize her during the palace collapse and use the dowager’s name as part of the trap.

Her release marks one of the few successful interruptions in the cascade. 卢植 rebukes Duan Gui from below the gallery, forcing him to let her go before 刘辩 / 弘农王 and Liu Xie, later 汉献帝, are carried farther into the flight.

何太后 / Empress Dowager He enters the wiki through Hanji 948 as the queen-mother figure tied to 刘辩 / 弘农王’s accession after 何进’s rise and death. In the episode’s deposition scene, 董卓 forces the court through the edict and ceremony that strips Liu Bian of imperial status and installs 汉献帝.

The source then makes Empress Dowager He part of Dong Zhuo’s effort to dismantle the He-family base. Dong Zhuo accuses her through the earlier Dong太皇太后 grievance, moves her to another palace, and has her poisoned shortly after the deposition. Her death turns the deposition from a title transfer into a bodily purge of the previous succession’s maternal and affinal support.
