阎太后 / Empress Dowager Yan (late Han)
Updated · 3 episodes · 1 show · 3 source notes
Overview
阎太后 / Empress Dowager Yan is a late-Han dowager whose current wiki profile now begins before defeat: as Yan Hou, she hides 汉安帝’s death on tour, returns to 洛阳, becomes empress dowager, and installs 北乡侯刘懿 / 刘裔 instead of 刘保. Hanji 803 then shows her trying to preserve control after Liu Yi’s own death, while Hanji 805 shows the restored Shun court deciding whether to humiliate, isolate, or ritually protect her defeated title.
Current Profile
Hanji 802 supplies Yan Taihou’s first succession-control layer. When Emperor An dies suddenly near Ye County, Yan Hou fears that officials in Luoyang will back the former crown prince Liu Bao. She works with 阎显 and 樊丰 to conceal the death, keep daily food and medicine performances going, return to the palace, announce the death from inside the capital, and take dowager authority.
The same source shows her first regency choice. Yan Taihou and Yan Xian install the young Beixiang Hou so the Yan family can govern behind him. She refuses Liu Bao access to An’s coffin and leaves him mourning outside the hall, which gives Liu Bao public sympathy while increasing resentment toward the Yan side. The Yan family then concentrates offices and purges old An-era networks, including 耿宝, Fan Feng, and 王圣.
Hanji 803 supplies Yan Taihou’s second crisis layer. When Liu Yi later dies on 125-10-27, she again conceals a ruler’s death, summons royal descendants, closes palace gates, stations troops, and increases security. After 孙程’s group enthrones Liu Bao, she promises large marquisate rewards for capturing Liu Bao or 李润. The restoration side cuts her off from outside communication, forces her to surrender the imperial seal, and moves her to Changle Palace.
Hanji 805 places Yan Taihou at the center of Shun’s immediate post-accession settlement. Yilang Chen Chan argues that she has no blood tie or mother-son affection with Shun and should be moved to a separate palace where they never meet. 周举 warns through Li He that if Yan Xian’s brothers have just been executed and Yan Taihou is confined before dying unexpectedly, Shun will struggle to command the empire. Shun accepts that warning, visits the East Palace on 126-01-01, performs full rites, and keeps the official account of calm before her 126-01-19 illness death.
Key Characteristics
- Active transition controller before defeat, using death concealment, return timing, palace announcement, and dowager authority after Emperor An’s death.
- Outer-relative regent whose preferred child ruler makes Yan-family behind-the-throne control easier.
- Public legitimacy liability because excluding Liu Bao from mourning creates sympathy for him and resentment toward her.
- Repeat death-concealment actor after Beixiang Hou’s later death, now trying to preserve succession choice inside the capital.
- Gate-and-seal loser whose communication is cut and whose seal surrender marks restoration victory.
- Defeated dowager whose title still matters to Shun’s restored legitimacy.
- Source-bounded death case where illness is the official account and further suspicion remains unproven.
Evidence
- Emperor An concealment: Hanji 802 says Yan Hou, Yan Xian, and Fan Feng hide An’s death, continue routine appearances, and return to Luoyang before public announcement.
- Child-ruler choice: Hanji 802 says Yan Taihou and Yan Xian install the young Beixiang Hou so the Yan family can hold power.
- Liu Bao exclusion: Hanji 802 says Liu Bao is not allowed to mourn before An’s coffin and cries outside for three days, moving people in Luoyang.
- Second concealed-death control: Hanji 803 says Yan Taihou hides Liu Yi’s death, summons royal descendants, closes gates, stations troops, and tightens security.
- Seal surrender: Hanji 803 says Sun Cheng’s side cuts Yan Taihou off from outside communication and forces her to surrender the imperial seal.
- Defeated-network context: Hanji 805 says Sun Cheng’s eunuch coup succeeds, Shun is restored, and the Yan outer relatives are thoroughly destroyed.
- Zhou Ju’s warning and ritual settlement: Hanji 805 says Zhou Ju warns against confinement, and Shun visits Yan Taihou at the East Palace on 126-01-01 with full rites.
- Death account: Hanji 805 says Yan Taihou dies on 126-01-19 under the official illness explanation, while the host only hints at possible hidden causes.
Qualifications
This page is bounded to Hanji 802, Hanji 803, and Hanji 805 and does not reconstruct Yan Taihou’s earlier life, full regency, private palace conditions, or true cause of death beyond the restoration crisis. Hanji 802 supports her first death-concealment and child-accession move after Emperor An’s death; Hanji 803 supports her second concealment after Beixiang Hou’s death; Hanji 805 supports Shun’s later legitimacy management. The current judgment does not prove the true cause of Yan Taihou’s death.
What Changed
- Added Hanji 802 as Yan Taihou’s pre-defeat layer: Emperor An’s hidden death, Liu Bao’s exclusion, Beixiang Hou’s accession, and first Yan-family consolidation.
- Reframed Hanji 803 as her second concealed-death crisis after Beixiang Hou’s own death.
- Preserved Hanji 805 as the defeated-dowager ritual management and death-account layer.
Relationships
- 汉安帝 - dead ruler whose hidden tour death lets Yan Taihou control the first succession window.
- 汉顺帝 - excluded Liu Bao, later restored ruler whose legitimacy could be damaged by mishandling Yan Taihou after victory.
- 北乡侯刘懿 / 刘裔 - young ruler first installed by Yan Taihou and later hidden by her after death.
- 阎显 - Yan-family powerholder who executes the family monopoly strategy around her dowager authority.
- 樊丰 - initial concealment collaborator later destroyed in the Yan cleanup.
- 耿宝 - old high-status powerholder purged after Yan Taihou’s first accession settlement.
- 失势太后名分处置 - concept directly grounded by Yan Taihou’s post-purge treatment.
- 周举 - adviser whose warning redirects the court from isolation toward visible ritual respect.
- 继位合法性清洗 - adjacent purge mechanism around the Yan-backed accession and Shun restoration.
- 外戚专权与清算 - broader late-Han family-power field behind Yan Taihou’s rise and fall.
