Overview

卫子夫 / Empress Wei Zifu enters the wiki through Hanji 387-1 as the empress whose suicide marks the depth of the 巫蛊之祸 catastrophe before 卫太子刘据’s final flight and death. Hanji 386-2 supplies the immediate sequence: after Liu Ju loses the Chang’an fighting, 汉武帝 sends officials to collect Wei Zifu’s empress seal, but she has already killed herself before the envoys arrive. Hanji 384-2 now adds the earlier anxiety layer: as imperial favor declines, Wei Zifu fears Liu Ju’s lenient handling of cases and the palace slander around him will make the heir vulnerable.

Current Profile

The sources do not provide Wei Zifu’s full biography. Hanji 384-2 shows her before the catastrophe as a politically anxious empress: she and Liu Ju sense declining favor, she worries that Liu Ju’s merciful decisions may offend Wudi’s harsher governing style, and she treats 苏文’s palace slander as dangerous enough to consider lethal removal. Hanji 386-2 then uses her death as the immediate household consequence of Liu Ju’s defeat: the order to collect her empress seal means her political identity is being stripped away, but the envoys arrive only after her suicide. Hanji 387-1 shows that her death does not stop the punitive response against Liu Ju’s circle. Her presence therefore works as both an early warning figure and a household-succession marker in this bounded evidence.

Key Characteristics

  • Western Han empress named in the Wugu aftermath.
  • Mother/household-side marker for Liu Ju’s destroyed succession branch.
  • Politically anxious palace actor who recognizes Su Wen’s slander and Liu Ju’s leniency as exposure risks before the open Wugu crisis.
  • Suicide victim whose death follows Liu Ju’s defeat and Wudi’s order to collect her empress seal.
  • Figure whose death does not halt Han Wudi’s continuing punishments.
  • Source-scoped evidence of how palace accusation becomes dynastic-family destruction.

Evidence

Wugu catastrophe:

  • Hanji 386-2 says Han Wudi sends officials to collect Wei Zifu’s empress seal after Liu Ju loses the Chang’an battle.
  • Hanji 386-2 says the envoys find Wei Zifu already dead by suicide.
  • Hanji 387-1 says Wei Zifu kills herself after the Wugu crisis destroys Liu Ju’s position.
  • Hanji 387-1 says Han Wudi continues punishment after her death.

Succession context:

  • Hanji 384-2 says Wei Zifu and Liu Ju feel insecure as Han Wudi’s favor declines.
  • Hanji 384-2 says Wei Zifu warns Liu Ju not to keep lightening punishments against Wudi’s severe-law style.
  • Hanji 384-2 says Wei Zifu hates Su Wen’s slander and urges Liu Ju to report him to Wudi, but Liu Ju refuses because he trusts Wudi’s discernment.
  • Hanji 386-2 links her suicide to Liu Ju’s battlefield defeat and the loss of empress status.
  • Hanji 387-1 links her death to Liu Ju’s flight, court fear, and the broader late-Wudi father-son tragedy.

Qualifications

This page is bounded to Hanji 387-1, Hanji 386-2, and Hanji 384-2. It does not reconstruct Wei Zifu’s full life, family background, marriage, political position, death record variants, seal-collection legal procedure, Su Wen’s complete biography, or later historiography.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 384-2’s earlier anxiety layer: declining favor, concern over Liu Ju’s leniency, and recognition of Su Wen’s slander as a real palace danger.
  • Preserved Hanji 386-2’s immediate suicide sequence and Hanji 387-1’s post-suicide punishment frame.
