Falls Curfew

The Falls Curfew appears in 699. The Troubles: Return of the IRA (Part 3) as the July 1970 British Army operation in the Lower Falls area of Belfast. Troops entered to search for an Official IRA arms cache and found guns, bombs, and ammunition, but the operation escalated through crowds, petrol bombs, tear gas, IRA gunfire, mass searches, more than 300 arrests, and accusations of destructive soldier conduct.

For the episode, the Falls Curfew is a classic Counterinsurgency Legitimacy Trap. Tactical weapons recovery did not translate into political success because the curfew and house searches damaged Catholic trust in the army and strengthened the Provisional IRA’s recruitment narrative.
