范进
范进 is the famous examination-success figure in 《儒林外史》, discussed in 58.儒林外史：假如考公成了唯一出路 as the entry point many readers know from school. The episode treats his madness after passing not as an isolated comic scene, but as a concentrated result of Imperial Examination As Only Exit: social contempt, family pressure, poverty, age, and sudden recognition collide at once.
The source pairs Fan Jin with 周进. Zhou Jin recognizes his own humiliation in Fan Jin and, after repeated rereading, convinces himself that Fan Jin’s mediocre-looking essay is “天地间之至文.” The episode uses this to keep Fan Jin’s talent ambiguous while making the status machine very clear. Fan Jin’s later inability to understand a Su Shi joke further lets the novel expose him without authorial lecturing.
