Francis Drake

Francis Drake appears in 695. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: The Shadow War (Part 5) as the English sailor and raider whose anti-Spanish expedition runs alongside Elizabeth I’s reluctant entry into the Low Countries crisis. The episode says he had already been knighted after circumnavigation and then spent quieter years in property, Parliament, Plymouth office, and local trade regulation before war opportunity returned.

Drake’s 1585-1586 expedition attacks Spanish interests including Vigo, Santo Domingo, and Cartagena. The source says it is less lucrative than hoped because it does not capture treasure ships, but strategically important because it exposes the vulnerability of Philip II’s American empire and contributes to pressure on Spanish credit.

Drake also functions as a contrast to Sir Philip Sidney. Sidney tries to join Drake’s expedition when Elizabeth temporarily reverses his Flushing appointment, but is recalled and sent to the Dutch theatre instead.
