Francis Throckmorton
Francis Throckmorton appears in 694. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: A Treacherous Conspiracy (Part 4) as the English Catholic gentleman whose movements and correspondence make the Throckmorton Plot visible to Francis Walsingham. The episode presents him as well connected but financially vulnerable after his father’s death and fine, which made him a plausible link between Mary, Queen of Scots, Catholic contacts in England, and conspirators in France.
Throckmorton was arrested on 7 November 1583 while encoding a letter to Mary. Under torture in the Tower he confessed and implicated Henry, Duke of Guise, Michel de Castelnau, Bernardino de Mendoza, and Mary, then retracted the confession at trial as coerced.
His execution at Tyburn on 10 July 1584 did not end the Mary problem for Elizabethan ministers. In the episode, Throckmorton’s case demonstrates how Confessional Invasion Conspiracy and intelligence work could reveal danger without yet giving Elizabeth I a clean legal path to execute Mary.
