French Fury

The French Fury appears in 694. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: A Treacherous Conspiracy (Part 4) as Francois, Duke of Anjou’s failed January 1583 coup attempt in Antwerp. Anjou had been proclaimed Prince and Lord of the Netherlands but wanted greater authority than the Dutch Revolt leadership was willing to grant.

The coup failed and Anjou left for France by June 1583. The episode treats this failure as the collapse of Elizabeth I’s preferred diplomatic solution for the Low Countries crisis: a French-backed Dutch settlement might have constrained Spain without forcing England into direct intervention.

In the wiki, the French Fury is therefore an inflection point before Treaty of Nonsuch. It helps explain why the later English move across the Strategic Intervention Threshold followed failed French alternatives rather than immediate English enthusiasm for war.
