盖勋 / Gai Xun (late Han)

Hanji 929 backfills Gai Xun before the Ji County reputation branch. He prevents 梁鹄 from killing 苏正和 despite disliking Su, then refuses to accept Su’s thanks as private reconciliation. The source frames this as 对事不对人式公义: private animus remains, but it cannot authorize murder or corrupt office judgment.

The same source gives Gai Xun a second private-grievance test through 左昌. After Zuo steals military grain and tries to expose Gai to danger, rebels kill 金城太守陈懿 and besiege Zuo at Ji County. Gai still presses 辛曾 toward rescue by invoking 司马穰苴 and military law, leaving the final rescue outcome for the Hanji 930 continuation.

Hanji 930 backfills Gai Xun’s western frontier reputation before his later capital-side remonstrance and anti-eunuch branch. At Ji County, he rebukes 边章 and helps produce the withdrawal of the siege; later, when his rescue force is defeated and he is badly wounded, 滇吾 stops other Qiang fighters from killing him because he regards Gai Xun as worthy.

The same source shows reputation converting back into office. 杨雍 recommends Gai Xun after his captivity and return, leading to his concurrent 汉阳郡 post. This makes Gai Xun an early example of 道德名望政治资本: battlefield failure does not erase value when enemy respect, official recommendation, and clean conduct all point in the same direction.

Hanji 941 introduces Gai Xun immediately before his stronger Hanji 942 anti-eunuch role. When 汉灵帝 holds a large Pingle Guan military display and calls himself “无上将军,” Gai Xun argues that former kings promoted virtue rather than empty force and that drilling in the capital while enemies remain outside only adds a militaristic reputation.

盖勋 enters the wiki through Hanji 942 as an upright late-Han official whose anti-eunuch stance makes him politically useful but also exposed. He treats 汉灵帝 as a ruler blocked by attendants rather than simply incapable, and asks 袁绍 to discuss removing the eunuchs from power.

The episode makes his transfer to Jingzhao yin a case of palace access monopoly: 蹇硕 learns of the plan and turns a respectable appointment into a way to move Gai Xun away from the Luoyang center. This creates a pre-Hanji 943 example of how direct palace access could neutralize capable outsiders before succession politics fully detonated.
