金利·艾 / Genly Ai is the [[Ekumen|艾库曼 / Ekumen]] envoy and central outsider-observer in [[TheLeftHandOfDarkness|《黑暗的左手》]], as discussed in 36.黑暗的左手：流放与爱的未来往事. The episode presents him as sincere, brave, and capable, but also impulsive, immature, and slow to understand [[Gethen|格森星 / Gethen]]’s indirect political language and ambisexual society.

Genly’s arc is a learning problem. He first mistrusts [[Estraven|伊斯特拉凡 / Estraven]] because Estraven speaks through [[ShifgrethorPoliticalFace|shifgrethor]] and political indirection; later, after imprisonment in [[Orgoreyn|欧格瑞恩 / Orgoreyn]] and rescue across the ice, he comes to understand Estraven as the one Gethenian who consistently believed him.
