Overview

Giuliano de’ Medici was Lorenzo de’ Medici’s brother and the successful murder target of the 1478 Pazzi conspiracy in Florence Cathedral.

Current Profile

The conspirators believed both brothers had to die simultaneously for the Medici network to be removed. When Giuliano considered missing mass because of illness, Francesco de’ Pazzi and Bernardo Baroncelli fetched him and checked that he wore no armor. At the elevation of the host they repeatedly stabbed him, killing him on the cathedral floor while Lorenzo escaped.

Giuliano’s death became the blood around which Lorenzo mobilized resistance and later presented the papal-Neapolitan war. His murder therefore failed in its political objective even as it inflicted the plot’s central personal loss.

Key Characteristics

  • Younger Medici brother treated as necessary co-target of the coup.
  • Drawn to cathedral mass after nearly staying away through illness.
  • Killed during worship in a coordinated stabbing attack.
  • Death used to frame Medici resistance and Lorenzo’s later peace gamble.

Qualifications

The source focuses on Giuliano as a victim of the conspiracy and supplies little independent account of his life, politics, relationships, or role in Medici government. Exact movements, dialogue, wounds, and conspirators’ intentions derive from the episode’s narrative reconstruction.

What Changed

  • Created a bounded profile distinguishing Giuliano’s death from the conspiracy’s failed political outcome.
