693. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: England’s Greatest Hero (Part 3) adds the ship’s voyage history before the public ceremony in episode 694. The ship begins as the Pelican, a small vessel built to Francis Drake’s requirements, before Drake renames it the Golden Hind at the Strait of Magellan.
The renaming carries a political sting because the golden hind is Christopher Hatton’s crest, and Drake has just executed Hatton’s secretary Thomas Doughty. On 1 April 1581, Elizabeth I met Drake aboard the Golden Hind at Deptford and had him knighted. The episode treats the scene as political theatre: crowds gather, the ship becomes a public stage, and Elizabeth has a French envoy perform the dubbing rather than doing it herself.
