公孙须 / Gongsun Xu appears in 《资治通鉴·周纪》42丨给孟尝君提意见的后果 as a retainer of 孟尝君 / 田文 in the ivory-bed story from 《战国策》.
邓图直 asks him to prevent a costly delivery after the Chu king gives Mengchang Jun an ivory bed. Deng worries that damaging the bed would be financially ruinous, and he offers Gongsun Xu an ancestral sword as repayment. Gongsun Xu therefore enters the advice scene with mixed motives rather than pure public-mindedness.
His argument still works. He tells Mengchang Jun that accepting an extravagant gift immediately after arriving in 楚国 would damage his reputation for义 and廉 and make future hosts struggle to match the precedent. Mengchang Jun refuses the bed, then treats Gongsun Xu’s admitted private bargain as evidence for content-over-motive remonstrance rather than as grounds for punishment.
