公子卬 / Gongzi Ang
公子卬 / Gongzi Ang appears in 《资治通鉴·周纪》22丨公孙鞅诈魏公子卬 as the 魏国 royal-family commander sent by 魏惠王 to face 公孙鞅 / 商鞅’s Qin attack in 340 BCE. The source transcript also uses 公子昂; this page keeps the episode-title form 公子卬 while treating both as the same figure.
His importance is less biographical than diagnostic. Because Gongzi Ang had known Shang Yang when Shang Yang was still connected to Wei, he treats a friendly letter, a proposed alliance oath, and a promise of mutual withdrawal as plausible. The episode says this is exactly the vulnerability Shang Yang exploits: the proposal sounds humane, but for the invading 秦国 side it would mean withdrawing without gains.
Gongzi Ang is captured during the post-oath drinking after hidden armed men emerge. That makes him the central target in 和谈诱捕 and a case of 动机偏差 inside Warring States military decision-making: trust, status similarity, and desire for a bloodless outcome can make an enemy’s incentives disappear from view.
《资治通鉴·周纪》23丨魏惠王 悔不用公叔之言 adds Gongzi Ang’s afterlife in Shang Yang’s reputation. The episode says Wei later refuses Shang Yang refuge because Gongzi Ang’s capture made Shang Yang unreadable: the same old-friend trust he exploited becomes the reason no one in Wei wants to risk believing him.
