贯高 / Guan Gao

贯高 / Guan Gao enters the wiki through Hanji 178 part 2 as a Zhao minister under 张敖. After 刘邦 passes through 邯郸 and repeatedly humiliates Zhang Ao, Guan Gao and 赵午 read the insult as an intolerable slight against their king.

The source makes Guan Gao important because he separates his assassination impulse from Zhang Ao’s will. Zhang Ao refuses the plot and insists that Zhao owes everything to Liu Bang’s grace toward 张耳’s line, but Guan Gao and the other ministers decide privately that they will bear the consequences themselves if the attack fails.

Hanji 179 continues the plot into the failed 百人县 ambush. Guan Gao and Zhao Wu hide killers in the walls of the lodging where Liu Bang is expected to stay, but Liu Bang becomes uneasy after hearing the place name and leaves by night. The source therefore changes Guan Gao from a minister who merely intends assassination into an actor whose plan almost reaches execution.

Hanji 180 completes the case’s first consequence. After the plot is reported, Zhao Wu and other conspirators die, but Guan Gao deliberately stays alive because 张敖 still needs someone to prove he did not participate. Under torture, Guan Gao refuses to implicate Zhang Ao; after 谢公 reports that testimony to 刘邦, Zhang Ao is released but demoted. Guan Gao then kills himself after confirming Zhang Ao’s release, making him the source case for 刑讯守口式申冤.

Hanji 180 part 2 makes the evaluation explicit. Liu Bang can admire and pardon Guan Gao, but Guan Gao treats survival as complete once Zhang Ao is free and kills himself because the regicide stain cannot be lived through. The episode uses 荀悦 to keep the page from turning Guan Gao into a clean hero: his truthful endurance matters, but private loyalty cannot erase the public crime of plotting against the ruler.
