韩千秋 / Han Qianqiu (Western Han)
Updated · 2 episodes · 1 show · 2 source notes
Overview
韩千秋 / Han Qianqiu is the former Jibei chancellor and volunteer commander who argues that royal support inside 南越 will let a small brave force kill 吕嘉. His two-thousand-person mission wins several early engagements and is then annihilated near Panyu; his posthumous treatment makes him the sources’ central example of courage being honored without battlefield success.
Current Profile
Hanji 352-1 supplies the decision before the march. After 庄参 refuses a two-thousand-person mission as too large for friendly persuasion but too small for coercion, Han Qianqiu volunteers. He argues that Nanyue is small and that 赵兴 and 樛太后 will respond from inside, so three hundred brave men can kill Lü Jia. Wudi instead sends him and the queen dowager’s brother 樛乐 with two thousand.
Hanji 352-2 presents the operational outcome. The advance initially appears successful but ends with the entire group killed about forty li from Panyu. 汉武帝 then distinguishes outcome from conduct: the force has not completed meritorious work, yet is still called the bravest vanguard.
The court compensates the dead soldiers’ families and makes Han Qianqiu’s son 韩延年 marquis of Cheng’an. Han Qianqiu’s place in the wiki is therefore not that of a victorious conqueror, but of a dead commander whose service becomes a signal for 阵亡先锋遗属封赏 before a much larger campaign.
Key Characteristics
- Former Jibei chancellor who volunteers after Zhuang Can refuses the assignment.
- Commander who expects royal support to make a small strike against Lü Jia sufficient.
- Co-leader with Jiu Le of the mission sent into Nanyue before the large conquest mobilization.
- Leader of a force that moves from initial success to complete destruction near Panyu.
- Vanguard remembered for courage even though the mission does not produce victory.
- Father of Han Yannian, whom the episode says is made marquis of Cheng’an.
Evidence
- Volunteer rationale: Hanji 352-1 identifies Han Qianqiu as a former Jibei chancellor and reports his claim that three hundred brave men can remove Lü Jia with royal support.
- Mission assignment: Hanji 352-1 says Wudi sends him and Jiu Le with two thousand troops.
- Advance and defeat: Hanji 352-2 says Han Qianqiu takes several cities before Lü Jia’s force kills the entire unit near Panyu.
- Court judgment: Hanji 352-2 says the group has not completed merit but is still the army’s courageous vanguard.
- Family reward: Hanji 352-2 says Han Yannian receives the Cheng’an marquisate after his father’s death.
Qualifications
This profile is bounded to two short popular-history summaries. “Former Jibei chancellor” adds one office but not a full earlier career. The sources do not settle his command relationship with Jiu Le, whether the royal party could actually coordinate with him after entry, his tactical responsibility for defeat, or whether every reported city changed durable control. His confidence and the exact three-hundred/two-thousand figures remain episode-attributed. The reward records the court’s stated evaluation; it does not turn the failed expedition into a victory.
What Changed
- Added Han Qianqiu’s former office, volunteer proposal, royal-support assumption, and co-mission with Jiu Le.
- Reframed the later annihilation as the test of an explicitly optimistic small-force judgment.
Relationships
- 韩延年 - son rewarded with the Cheng’an marquisate after Han Qianqiu’s death.
- 庄参 - cautious predecessor whose refusal prompts Han Qianqiu’s opposing proposal.
- 樛乐 - queen dowager’s brother sent alongside Han Qianqiu.
- 赵兴 - Nanyue king whose expected support underlies the volunteer plan.
- 吕嘉 - Nanyue resistance leader whose troops destroy Han Qianqiu’s force.
- 南越 - polity entered by the failed vanguard.
- 汉武帝 - ruler who honors the dead force and prepares a larger campaign.
- 阵亡先锋遗属封赏 - reward mechanism built from the treatment of his family and fellow casualties.
