河西四郡 / Hexi Four Commanderies now appear in the wiki as both a 123 CE frontier-buffer dependency and a 194 CE administrative problem. Hanji 799 uses Hexi to explain why abandoning the Western Regions is dangerous; Hanji 979 identifies the group as Dunhuang, Jiuquan, Zhangye, and Wuwei when they request separation from Liangzhou administration.

Current Profile

In Hanji 799, Hexi is the region exposed by Northern Xiongnu and Cheshi pressure. 张珰 argues from Dunhuang that if the Han abandons the Western Regions, Hexi cannot stand alone. His middle plan also makes the four commanderies supply grain and yak resources for a five-hundred-soldier Liuzhong garrison.

陈忠 strengthens the same argument at court. If the Han refuses to help Shanshan and other Western Regions states, those states will attach to Northern Xiongnu; Xiongnu resources and courage will grow, and pressure may extend toward Qiang regions, making Hexi more dangerous. Emperor An accepts the anti-abandonment line and appoints 班勇 to Liuzhong.

Hanji 979 adds a later administrative layer. The commanderies are too far from the Liangzhou office, and road disorder makes ordinary governance impractical, so the court creates 雍州 and appoints 邯郸商 as inspector. The page stays distinct from 河西 because this is a late-Han provincial-administration and corridor-defense issue, not the Warring States Wei-Qin frontier.
