堀木 / Horiki is the older, vulgar Tokyo acquaintance who pulls [[ObaYozo|大庭叶藏]] into drink, sex work, performances, and leftist student circles in 33.人间失格：胆小鬼的壮烈献祭. The episode treats him as an urban drift figure whose appeal is practical: he handles social situations that Yozo cannot manage.

That practical usefulness is also corrosive. Horiki lets Yozo step outside school, family, and official ambition, but the escape becomes dependence, debt, intoxication, and moral self-disgust.
