侯嬴 / Hou Ying enters the wiki through 《资治通鉴·周纪》95丨长平之战后秦国为什么没有灭了赵国（3） as the 信陵君 adviser who judges whether 虞卿 and 魏齐 should be received after fleeing 赵国.
His role is brief but structurally important. When Xinlingjun hesitates because receiving Wei Qi risks offending 秦国, Hou Ying answers by stressing how hard it is to know others and be known by others. He points to Yu Qing’s history: repeated recognition by 赵丹 / 赵孝成王, rise to high office, and willingness to abandon wealth and rank for a friend.
The episode uses Hou Ying as a gatekeeper of aristocratic reputation. His argument turns hospitality from a private courtesy into a public test of character: if Xinlingjun refuses a person who has already sacrificed office for friendship, the refusal would damage his own standing as one of the 战国四公子.
《资治通鉴·周纪》96丨毛遂自荐（5） gives Hou Ying’s earlier entry story. He is described as a poor, elderly, low-status Yi Gate keeper in 大梁, but the episode reads that position through 儒家低职隐居 rather than as proof of uselessness. He can work a humble post for subsistence while refusing the normal ambition of rank, wealth, and court service.
The same source shows Hou Ying testing Xinlingjun before accepting him as patron. After Xinlingjun personally drives to receive him and leaves the honored left carriage seat empty, Hou Ying does not politely defer. He boards, asks to detour to the market, spends a long time talking with 朱亥, and watches Xinlingjun’s face. When Xinlingjun remains calm, Hou Ying later explains that the public delay was meant to spread Xinlingjun’s reputation for honoring worthy people below him.
Hou Ying therefore now has two connected wiki functions. In Zhouji 95 he judges whether Xinlingjun should receive dangerous guests; in Zhouji 96 part 5 he is the person who first made Xinlingjun’s 礼贤下士式人才吸附 publicly credible through 公开受辱式礼贤测试.
《资治通鉴·周纪》96丨毛遂自荐（6） turns Hou Ying from reputation tester into operational strategist. When Xinlingjun prepares to die uselessly with his retainers, Hou Ying points out that this would be like feeding meat to a hungry tiger. He then supplies the working plan: use 如姬 to steal the king’s half of the tiger tally, take 晋鄙’s army, and bring 朱亥 because Jin Bi may not obey even a matching tally.
This source sharply raises Hou Ying’s political-intelligence profile. He knows where the tally is kept, who can reach it, why Ru Ji is willing to help, and why field command may still require violence. The same intelligence also carries moral exposure: his plan saves 赵国, but it prepares the killing that makes 窃符救赵 ethically compromised.
《资治通鉴·周纪》97-1丨白起之死 closes Hou Ying’s arc with the promised death that had been deferred by the operational plan. He says he is too old to accompany 信陵君, calculates the likely travel time to Jin Bi’s camp, and kills himself facing north when Xinlingjun should have arrived. The episode reads this as a pure act of 士为知己者死: Hou Ying is not bought, tricked, or seeking reward, but turns recognition into a final “义” act.
