皇甫嵩 / Huangfu Song (late Han)
Hanji 951 backfills the missed anti-董卓 opening before Huangfu Song’s later Chang’an survival scene. While he holds a large force at Fufeng, 葛勋 and 梁衍 suggest using those troops to welcome 汉献帝, claim imperial authority, and attack Dong Zhuo in coordination with 袁绍 from the east.
Huangfu Song refuses. The source treats the refusal as a high-risk 名器合法性 problem: Dong Zhuo remains the formal representative of the court, failure would expose Huangfu Song’s family and followers, and the cost of moving from legitimate opposition into open military action is too high for him to accept.
Hanji 955 adds the cliffhanger setup for Huangfu Song’s Hanji 956 survival scene. After 董卓 reaches 长安, the officials come out to greet him and he asks Huangfu Song whether he is afraid, activating an old grievance that the next episode develops into 暴政下的防御性言说.
Hanji 956 adds Huangfu Song’s earlier survival scene under 董卓. Dong Zhuo asks whether Huangfu Song now fears him, converting old command history into public intimidation; Huangfu Song answers by making his own fear depend on whether Dong Zhuo assists the court with virtue or abuses punishment. The reply turns a personal threat into a legitimacy test and belongs to 暴政下的防御性言说.
Hanji 965 gives Huangfu Song a practical reassurance role before the later title-removal note. Someone proposes that he command or settle Dong Zhuo’s old troops near Shan County so Liangzhou soldiers feel safer and the court retains a guard against Guandong uncertainty. 王允 rejects the plan, turning Huangfu Song into a missed stabilizing channel rather than an active executor.
Huangfu Song appears in Hanji 967 as the taiwei removed during the post-Dong Zhuo Chang’an reshuffle. The episode does not develop his biography; his significance here is structural, marking how the court under Li Jue and Guo Si control could still issue and revoke high offices.
His dismissal appears beside Liu Biao’s promotion to Zhengnan general, Jingzhou governor, and Chengwu marquis. Together, these details show the court’s symbolic authority still mattered even while the capital was militarily captured.
