桓焉 / Huan Yan (late Han)
Updated · 2 episodes · 1 show · 2 source notes
Overview
桓焉 / Huan Yan is a late-Han official whose current evidence has two bounded roles: an early 124 CE objection to 汉安帝’s planned deposition of 刘保, and a later 135 CE role carrying the appointment document that brings 梁商 into the Grand General office under Shun.
Current Profile
Hanji 801 identifies Huan Yan as taichang during the Liu Bao deposition crisis. With Lai Li and Zhang Hao, he argues that Liu Bao is too young to bear full responsibility for palace accusations and that the correct remedy is loyal ministerial protection and ritual guidance rather than removal from crown-prince status.
Hanji 817 later places Huan Yan in Shun’s 135 CE court. When Liang Shang avoids the Grand General office through illness, Shun sends Huan Yan with the appointment document to compel or persuade Liang into service.
The two source points are thin but compatible. Huan Yan appears as a high ritual/appointment-channel official who can participate in sensitive succession or office transitions, but the current evidence does not yet justify a full political profile beyond those bounded functions.
Key Characteristics
- Taichang who joins the first principled objection to Liu Bao’s deposition.
- Uses the shared age-responsibility and loyal-guidance argument rather than a factional counterclaim.
- Later serves as the document-bearing envoy in Liang Shang’s Grand General appointment.
- Recurrent but still sparse official whose current profile is office-function focused.
Evidence
- Anti-deposition objection: Hanji 801 says Huan Yan, Lai Li, and Zhang Hao oppose the plan to depose ten-year-old Liu Bao.
- Remedy framing: Hanji 801 says the objectors recommend loyal ministers and ritual guidance instead of deposition.
- Appointment mission: Hanji 817 says Shun sends Huan Yan with the appointment document when Liang Shang avoids Grand General office through illness.
Qualifications
This page is bounded to Hanji 801 and Hanji 817. It does not reconstruct Huan Yan’s full career, exact family background, factional alignment, or later fate. Earlier source notes kept Huan Yan source-scoped; the page now exists because Hanji 801 and Hanji 817 give two separate court-transition roles.
What Changed
- Created Huan Yan as a recurrent late-Han official bridging Liu Bao’s 124 CE deposition debate and Liang Shang’s 135 CE Grand General appointment.
Relationships
- 来历 - fellow senior objector in the first Liu Bao deposition debate.
- 张皓 - fellow objector who extends the warning through historical precedent.
- 汉安帝 - ruler whose planned deposition Huan Yan opposes.
- 汉顺帝 / 刘保 - crown prince Huan Yan helps defend and later emperor who sends him to Liang Shang.
- 梁商 - Grand General appointee to whom Huan Yan carries the appointment document.
- 直谏入罪 - adjacent pattern because Huan Yan’s initial objection is later overshadowed by threats against the Hongdu Gate remonstrants.
- 储君拥戴威胁感 - succession-security frame that explains why the objectors’ age argument loses force.
