将渠 / Jiang Qu

将渠 / Jiang Qu appears in 《资治通鉴·秦纪》100-2|六国竟然同时为他吊丧 as the 燕国 minister who physically tries to stop 燕王喜 from attacking 赵国. His warning is ethical and strategic at once: Yan has just made an alliance with Zhao and given gifts, so immediate invasion will carry a legitimacy and credibility cost.

The episode makes his remonstrance dramatic. Jiang Qu grabs Yan Wang Xi’s sash to stop him from leaving, is kicked by the ruler, and says he is not blocking the king for his own sake but for the king’s sake. That scene turns court advice into bodily resistance against a bad war decision.

After Yan loses the 鄗代之战 to 廉颇, Zhao demands Jiang Qu as the peace negotiator. Yan Wang Xi makes him chancellor and sends him, after which Zhao withdraws. Jiang Qu therefore becomes the ignored adviser whose credibility is needed to repair the policy he warned against.
