寋朗 / Jian Lang (Eastern Han)
Updated · 1 episodes · 1 show · 1 source notes
Overview
寋朗 / Jian Lang is the Eastern Han shiyushi who interrupts the Chu-prison implication cascade in Hanji 740. He tests the accusers’ claims by asking whether they can describe the men they have implicated, then risks punishment by telling 汉明帝 that ministers privately know many people in the case are wronged.
Current Profile
Jian Lang’s current profile is defined by evidence discipline under lethal hierarchy. He does not simply plead for mercy; he first checks whether Yan Zhong and Wang Ping can identify the physical appearance of the marquises they accuse. Their failure turns the accusation from a confession chain into a testable falsehood.
His remonstrance then exposes a court-feedback failure. Mingdi initially treats the memorial as disloyal and orders Jian Lang beaten, but Jian asks to speak once more before death, says the memorial is his own act, and explains that case officials are using torture and harsh inclusion to display loyalty while other ministers dare not speak. The result is partial correction: Mingdi releases him, reviews prison cases, and later releases or commutes many defendants.
Key Characteristics
- Evidence-testing censor who challenges implication by checking whether accusers know basic facts about the people they name.
- Death-risk remonstrator who speaks again after Mingdi orders punishment.
- Institutional truth-teller who names the incentive problem: officials prefer harsh inclusion to avoid appearing lenient toward rebels.
- Court-feedback repair figure whose speech helps move Mingdi from anger toward prison review.
- Name-normalization case: the episode transcript has “剑郎”, while the chronicle route is kept as 寋朗 / Jian Lang with 寒朗 as a variant.
Evidence
- Appearance-test verification: Hanji 740 says Jian Lang asks Yan Zhong and Wang Ping about the accused marquises’ appearance and finds they cannot describe them.
- Risk under imperial anger: Hanji 740 says Mingdi accuses him of holding two ends and orders punishment before Jian requests one more speech.
- Sole responsibility: Hanji 740 presents Jian Lang as saying the memorial was his own act because he fears clan-wide punishment.
- Feedback repair: Hanji 740 links his speech to Mingdi’s release of Jian Lang, review of Luoyang prison, and release of more than one thousand people.
Qualifications
The page does not treat Jian Lang as the sole rescuer of the entire case. His intervention combines with Lu Xu’s character evidence, Empress Ma’s counsel, and Yuan An’s later review. The name normalization follows the chronicle evidence; transcript forms and the 寒朗 variant remain noted but do not create separate pages.
What Changed
- Created this page from Hanji 740 as the durable route for the Chu-prison censor.
- Added Jian Lang as an evidence-verification and death-risk remonstrance figure.
- Captured his role in repairing a court-feedback collapse without overstating him as the only cause of correction.
Relationships
- 汉明帝 / Emperor Ming of Han - ruler whom Jian Lang confronts and partially persuades.
- 刘英 / Liu Ying (Chu King, Eastern Han) - Chu king whose case creates the prison context Jian Lang reviews.
- 刑讯攀引扩大 / Coercive Implication Cascade - failure mode Jian Lang exposes through appearance-test verification.
- Palace Accusation Verification / 宫廷指控核验 - broader verification pattern strengthened by Jian Lang’s anti-implication method.
- 赴死式直谏 / Death-Defying Remonstrance - courage pattern because Jian Lang speaks when punishment or death is imminent.
- Court Feedback Collapse / 君臣反馈失灵 - failure condition in which ministers privately know injustice but fear speaking.
- Evidence Over Testimony - evidentiary principle illustrated by testing confession claims against independent facts.
- 袁安 / Yuan An (Eastern Han) - later official who continues the case-repair pattern through file review and household release.
