Overview

金牛道 / Jinniu Road is a major branch of the 古蜀道网络 linking 汉中 through Guangyuan, Zhaohua, Jianmen, Zitong, Mianyang, and Deyang toward 成都.

Current Profile

Among the episode’s three roads, Jinniu Road has the longest continuous official importance and the richest combination of visible remains and walkable sections. Its political memory is often traced to Qin’s 316 BCE conquest of Shu and the “stone ox excreting gold” legend, although the source allows that earlier movement may predate that event.

The route is not materially frozen in antiquity. The stone paving and cypress-lined sections around Cuiyun Corridor largely present Ming-Qing road forms, and the northern line shifted eastward more than once as political centers and preferred connections changed.

The road’s legendary opening by a deceptive stone-ox gift is cultural memory, not a secure construction record. Early origins and exact ancient alignments remain less certain than the later visible road fabric.
