John Hume
John Hume appears in 698. The Troubles: The Brink of Civil War (Part 2) as part of the younger Catholic civil-rights generation in Northern Ireland. The episode places him alongside Austin Currie and Gerry Fitt in demands for fair housing, fair electoral boundaries, an end to the B Specials, and local electoral reform.
During the August 1969 crisis, Hume is one of the civil-rights figures who urged Westminster to send troops. In the source, that demand reflects a moment when many Catholics viewed the British Army as a possible protector from loyalist violence and the RUC, before the army’s role later changed.
