Joseph Barnett
Overview
Joseph Barnett was a Billingsgate Fish Market porter and the former cohabiting partner of Mary Jane Kelly, whose testimony supplies part of the recoverable account of her life immediately before her murder.
Current Profile
Barnett lived with Kelly and treated her as his wife. After he lost his job in July 1888, their household finances worsened and Kelly reportedly returned to soliciting to help pay rent. He moved out roughly ten days before her death after a serious argument but continued to visit; on 8 November, he said they were on good terms, though he had neither work nor money to give her.
After the murder, Barnett identified Kelly by her hair and eyes because of the condition of her body. He later insisted that she receive a Catholic burial under the name Mary Jeanette Kelly. His testimony is important but not a complete or independently verified biography of Kelly.
