居庸关 / Juyong Pass

居庸关 / Juyong Pass enters through Hanji 972 as both a failed refuge and a frontier route. After 公孙瓒 breaks 刘虞’s attack, Liu Yu retreats there with officials, but Gongsun Zan captures the position after three days.

The same source also routes 田筹 through Juyong Pass on his covert mission to 汉献帝. The pass therefore marks the difference between two uses of geography: Liu Yu’s refuge cannot compensate for defeat, while Tian Chou uses the frontier route to preserve a narrow channel to the court.
