孔僖 / Kong Xi (Eastern Han)
Updated · 2 episodes · 1 show · 2 source notes
Overview
孔僖 / Kong Xi now has two Zhangdi-era source roles. Hanji 754 presents him as the Taixue figure who defends historically grounded criticism after Liang Yu reports his discussion with Cui Yin. Hanji 755 presents him as the Confucius descendant whose modest answer to Emperor Zhang at Qufu earns appointment.
Current Profile
Hanji 754 makes Kong Xi a speech-boundary figure. He and Cui Yin discuss Emperor Wu’s early merits and later failures; Liang Yu reports the discussion as defaming a former emperor and mocking the current ruler. Kong Xi’s memorial argues that defamation means invented slander, while citing the historical record is different. If criticism is true, it should prompt correction; if mistaken, punishment still risks making people afraid to speak.
Emperor Zhang stops pursuing the case and appoints Kong Xi as Lantai lingshi. This makes Kong Xi an example of historical critique tolerance: his role is not just personal eloquence but a case where ruler judgment keeps recorded criticism from becoming criminal slander.
Hanji 755 then places Kong Xi inside Zhangdi’s ritual visit to Qufu. After sacrificing to Confucius and the seventy-two disciples, Zhangdi gathers adult Kong-lineage men and asks whether the ceremony brings honor to the family. Kong Xi answers by refusing to make the rite a private family triumph. He says the emperor’s visit honors the former teacher and displays sage virtue, while the Kong lineage does not dare claim personal glory. Zhangdi praises him and appoints him as langzhong.
Key Characteristics
- Eastern Han Taixue figure who distinguishes historical criticism from fabricated slander.
- Co-accused discussant with Cui Yin after Liang Yu reports overheard imperial criticism.
- Appointment-worthy speaker under Emperor Zhang in both the Lantai and Qufu scenes.
- Kong-lineage representative whose modest ritual answer redirects honor from family vanity to teacher reverence.
- Identity-disambiguated from the existing Kong Xi / 孔熙 Gaixia commander page.
Evidence
- Speech case setup: Hanji 754 says Kong Xi and Cui Yin discuss Emperor Wu’s record and are reported by Liang Yu as defamatory.
- Self-defense logic: Hanji 754 presents Kong Xi distinguishing invented slander from historical discussion and warning against making people afraid to speak.
- Non-punitive result: Hanji 754 says Emperor Zhang stops the case and appoints Kong Xi as Lantai lingshi.
- Ritual setting: Hanji 755 says Zhangdi visits Qufu, sacrifices to Confucius and the seventy-two disciples, and gathers adult Kong-lineage men.
- Modest answer and appointment: Hanji 755 says Kong Xi frames the event as respect for the former teacher rather than private glory, after which Zhangdi praises him and appoints him as langzhong.
- Route separation: Hanji 755 uses 孔僖, while Hanji 754 uses 孔熙 in the transcript; the wiki keeps both as the Eastern Han 孔僖 route rather than the existing 孔熙 Gaixia figure.
Qualifications
This page remains bounded to Hanji 754 and Hanji 755. It does not reconstruct Kong Xi’s full career, the whole Kong lineage’s Eastern Han status, or the legal procedure behind the speech case. The Hanji 754 spelling 孔熙 is treated as the episode’s transcript form for the Eastern Han Kong Xi/孔僖 subject, not as evidence for merging with the Chu-Han Kong Xi page.
What Changed
- Added Hanji 754 as an earlier Taixue historical-critique and Lantai-appointment layer.
- Reframed Kong Xi as both a speech-boundary figure and a ritual-modesty figure under Emperor Zhang.
- Preserved the identity distinction from 孔熙 while noting the Hanji 754 transcript spelling.
Relationships
- 汉章帝 - ruler whose judgment turns Kong Xi’s speech defense and ritual answer into appointments.
- 崔骃 - co-discussant in the Taixue criticism case.
- 梁玉 - informer whose report creates the speech accusation Kong Xi answers.
- 据史批评容忍 - concept directly created from Kong Xi’s memorial and Zhangdi’s response.
- 太学 - institutional setting of the reported discussion.
- 孔子 - ancestral teacher whose sacrifice gives Kong Xi his Qufu source role.
- 礼制政治秩序 - ritual-order concept illustrated by the Qufu ceremony.
- 仪式感秩序生成 - adjacent concept because the sacrifice converts imperial presence into reverent public feeling.
- 孔熙 - same romanized name and one source spelling, but separate historical identity.
