Overview

来历 / Lai Li is a late-Han official whose current wiki profile now combines two Emperor An-era remonstrance roles. Hanji 800 shows him rebuking Geng Bao for siding with corrupt actors against Yang Zhen; Hanji 801 makes him the clearest persistent defender of crown prince Liu Bao against Emperor An’s deposition decision.

Current Profile

Hanji 800 introduces Lai Li at the end of the Yang Zhen crisis as taipu and Zhengqiang marquis. After Geng Bao helps Fan Feng’s side by accusing Yang Zhen of resentful noncompliance, Lai Li criticizes Geng Bao as a favored close relative of the emperor who should repay state grace rather than lean toward corrupt ministers and injure loyal men.

That first current layer gives Lai Li a judgment role before his better-known Liu Bao remonstrance. The source also ties him to Lai Xi’s loyal and strategic Eastern Han military reputation, making Lai Li’s rebuke part of a family-style loyal-service frame rather than only a personal insult against Geng Bao.

Hanji 801 then places Lai Li as taipu during the Liu Bao crisis. When Fan Feng and Yan Hou’s accusations move Emperor An toward deposing the ten-year-old crown prince, Lai Li joins Huan Yan and Zhang Hao in arguing that an under-fifteen child should not bear full guilt and that Liu Bao did not know Wang Nan and Bing Ji’s alleged plots.

After Liu Bao is made Jiyin Wang on 124-09-07, Lai Li joins more than ten officials at Hongdu Gate to remonstrate that the prince is blameless. Emperor An answers through a Zhongchangshi edict that recodes the protest as hidden motive and threatens punishment. Xue Hao submits, other officials withdraw, but Lai Li rebukes the retreat and remains for several days.

The source ends with punishment rather than persuasion. Chen Zhong and the shangshu group memorialize against Lai Li; Emperor An dismisses Lai Li and his brothers, reduces his fief tax, degrades Lai Li’s mother Wu’an Princess, and bars her from palace remonstrance. Lai Li therefore models a remonstrant whose persistence forces the ruler to expose coercion rather than revise the succession decision.

Key Characteristics

  • Taipu and Zhengqiang marquis who rebukes Geng Bao after the Yang Zhen case.
  • Moral critic of powerful relatives who injure loyal officials while enjoying imperial favor.
  • Defender of Liu Bao’s age, ignorance, and need for loyal tutors rather than punishment.
  • Hongdu Gate remonstrant who remains after collective protest breaks under threat.
  • Case of family and fief pressure being used against a direct speaker.
  • Source-bounded example of principled remonstrance under Emperor An’s captured court.

Evidence

  • Geng Bao rebuke: Hanji 800 says Lai Li criticizes Geng Bao for favoring corrupt actors and injuring loyal men after Yang Zhen’s removal.
  • Loyal-family framing: Hanji 800 connects Lai Li to Lai Xi’s loyal and strategic Eastern Han military reputation.
  • First Liu Bao objection: Hanji 801 says Lai Li, Huan Yan, and Zhang Hao oppose the deposition debate by arguing from Liu Bao’s age and lack of knowledge.
  • Hongdu Gate persistence: Hanji 801 says Lai Li joins the gate remonstrance, rejects Xue Hao’s retreat, and stays after others withdraw.
  • Punishment: Hanji 801 says Emperor An dismisses Lai Li and his brothers, reduces fief revenue, degrades Wu’an Princess, and blocks her palace remonstrance.

Qualifications

This page is bounded to Hanji 800 and Hanji 801. It does not reconstruct Lai Li’s full career, complete family background, exact fief administration, or the complete participant list at Hongdu Gate. Hanji 800’s Lai Xi discussion is used only as the source’s family-reputation frame, not as a full Lai-family biography.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 800 as Lai Li’s earlier moral rebuke of Geng Bao after the Yang Zhen case.
  • Preserved Hanji 801 as the central persistent-remonstrance layer in the Liu Bao deposition crisis.
