Lake Maracaibo
Lake Maracaibo appears in Chevron, Venezuela and the Paradox of Plenty as the site where Venezuelan oil was discovered more than a century ago. The episode says a 1922 gusher there sent oil spraying for nine days and drew foreign companies, machinery, geologists, refineries, and corporate infrastructure into Venezuela.
In the wiki, the lake is the origin point for Venezuela’s Petrostate branch. The discovery helped replace an agrarian coffee-export economy with oil exports, making Dutch Disease, Oil Revenue Dependence, and later Oil Concession Bargaining easier to understand as consequences of a specific historical shock rather than abstract categories.
