Overview

La Navidad was the improvised Spanish outpost founded on Hispaniola after the Santa María wrecked on Christmas Eve 1492 and insufficient ship capacity remained to return every crew member to Spain.

In 307: Columbus: A New World? (Part 2), La Navidad is not the planned outcome of a settled colonial program. It emerges from maritime accident and logistical constraint: the Santa María is lost, the Niña and Pinta cannot carry everyone home, and Christopher Columbus leaves 39 men behind on Hispaniola.

The outpost nevertheless changes the voyage’s character. A reconnaissance mission now has a continuing European presence tied to gold seeking and dependence on nearby Taíno communities. The episode calls it the first European town established in the Americas; Part 3 later begins with its destruction after Spanish abuse and internal conflict.
