Hanji 965 backfills the clique’s fear before it becomes open Chang’an control. After 王允 cancels or refuses credible amnesty and rejects a 皇甫嵩 settlement plan, Dong Zhuo’s old generals treat disbanding as a path to being killed. 牛辅’s victory over 李肃 does not stabilize the field because his own camp panic and death show how brittle remnant command already is.
Hanji 973 supplies the external-pressure prelude to the clique’s internal fracture. 李傕’s side can still coordinate enough for 樊稠, 郭汜, and 李利 to defeat 马腾 and 韩遂 at 长平观之战.
That victory does not create stable trust. Han Sui’s post-battle reconciliation with Fan Chou shows how outside-war contacts can remain socially ambiguous, and Hanji 984 later turns that ambiguity into the suspicion channel behind Fan Chou’s purge.

In the source, the bloc’s shared control of 长安 and the court is predatory from the start. The Sanfu / 关中 area still has large population remnants, but repeated plunder by Li Jue, Guo Si, Fan Chou, and their soldiers combines with famine until social order breaks down.
贾诩 can mediate among the commanders and preserve surface peace, but the underlying arrangement has no stable authority boundary. Fan Chou’s battlefield success against 马腾 and 韩遂 gives Li Jue both a useful victory and a threatening subordinate, so 李利’s report of Fan Chou’s friendly field conversation with Han Sui becomes evidence inside 军功声望威胁清洗.
After Fan Chou dies, the clique loses its internal balancing member. Guo Si’s household suspicion then accelerates the Li-Guo rupture, and 李暹’s seizure of 汉献帝 for Li Jue turns the emperor into an open prize before the fully visible hostage symmetry in Hanji 985.
