廉颇 / Lian Po

廉颇 / Lian Po enters the wiki through 《资治通鉴·周纪》77丨廉颇与蔺相如 史上最著名的一对“好基友” as the 赵国 general paired with 蔺相如 in the 渑池 and “将相和” sequence. Before the meeting, he and Lin advise 赵惠文王赵何 to attend because refusing 秦昭襄王’s invitation would make Zhao look timid.

Lian Po’s most practical act in the meeting setup is a contingency plan. When he escorts Zhao He to the border, he proposes that if the ruler has not returned after thirty days, Zhao should install the crown prince. The episode reads this as a way to deny 秦国 hostage leverage if the Mianchi invitation becomes another meeting trap.

After Lin Xiangru prevents Zhao’s humiliation at Mianchi and is promoted above him, Lian Po turns resentful. He sees his own battlefield record as weightier than Lin’s “mouth-and-tongue” achievement and threatens to humiliate Lin in person.

The episode then turns Lian Po from rank rival into the visible apologizer in 将相和式内部团结. Once he hears Lin explain that Zhao’s security depends on both men remaining usable together, Lian Po comes bare-backed with brambles to apologize. His “负荆请罪” converts personal resentment into public repair and makes the two men a paired deterrent against Qin.

《资治通鉴·周纪》87丨“狭路相逢勇者胜”终于找到出处了！ adds a more cautious Lian Po moment before 阏与 / 燕宇之战. When 赵惠文王赵何 asks whether the besieged city can be rescued, Lian Po says the road is distant, narrow, and difficult, so rescue is not feasible. The episode uses that refusal to set up 赵奢’s contrasting “狭路相逢勇者胜” judgment.

《资治通鉴·周纪》94丨杀神白起，长平之战中的“草包”名将？（1） puts Lian Po at the center of the 长平之战 replacement crisis. After repeated Zhao losses under Qin attack, he retreats behind defenses and refuses open battle. The episode treats this as a plausible battlefield adaptation, but 赵丹 / 赵孝成王 reads it as timidity and repeatedly pressures him to fight.

Lian Po then becomes the target of 范雎’s 反间流言楔入. Qin spreads the claim that it does not fear Lian Po and that Lian Po is close to surrender, while it supposedly fears 赵括. The tactic succeeds because Zhao Dan already wants an alternative, making Lian Po the Zhao-side version of 阵前换将风险.

《资治通鉴·周纪》94丨杀神白起，长平之战中的“草包”名将？（2） shows what is lost when Lian Po’s defensive posture is abandoned. Zhao Kuo changes the deployment and attacks across the Dan River, allowing 白起 to use feigned retreat, barriers, and rear-cutting forces to trap the army away from its camp and food route. Lian Po’s caution therefore reads less as simple passivity and more as the strategy that had avoided exactly this kind of encirclement logistics trap.

《资治通鉴·周纪》94丨杀神白起，长平之战中的“草包”名将？（3） makes that retrospective judgment explicit. The host says Lian Po understood that Zhao at Changping was “攻则不足，守则有余”: the confrontation was a patience contest where the side that moved first or made the first mistake would create the opening. Zhao Kuo’s failed breakout, death, and the army’s surrender make Lian Po’s defensive endurance look like a strategic necessity rather than cowardice.
