刘辩 / Liu Bian (Hongnong Wang)

Hanji 946 gives Liu Bian’s vulnerable imperial-body prelude before Dong Zhuo sees him in Hanji 947. During the palace violence, 张让 and 段珪 take him with Liu Xie, later 汉献帝, out through palace passageways toward 小平津 without normal seals, escort, or command order.

The episode makes the ruler’s status powerful but materially exposed. Liu Bian remains emperor, yet the imperial party can be moved on foot by fleeing eunuchs until 闵贡 catches up near the Yellow River, giving 名器合法性 a first damaged-court layer before the formal deposition.

Hanji 947 backfills Liu Bian’s last phase as reigning young emperor before Hanji 948’s deposition. After the Luoyang disorder he flees, is found near the capital, and reacts fearfully when 董卓 arrives with soldiers.

The episode makes his weakness politically consequential because Dong Zhuo compares his panic with Liu Xie’s composed answers. That comparison becomes the first source layer for 胁迫式废立: Liu Bian has not yet been deposed, but Dong Zhuo has already begun forming the argument for replacement.

Hanji 948 backfills Liu Bian’s deposition before his death in Hanji 950. The episode presents him as the young emperor raised after 汉灵帝 and 何进, then stripped of imperial status when 董卓 forces the court to install 汉献帝.

His demotion to Hongnong Wang matters because the source treats youth and weakness as Dong Zhuo’s stated pretext, not as a legitimate forfeiture. 袁绍 and 卢植 both object that Liu Bian lacks the sort of public fault used in earlier deposition precedents, making his removal a case of 胁迫式废立.

刘辩 / Liu Bian enters the wiki through Hanji 950 as the deposed emperor and Hongnong Wang killed under 董卓’s control. The episode says Dong Zhuo sends 李儒 with poisoned wine to kill the fifteen-year-old Liu Bian, turning the captured court into a site of dynastic murder rather than merely intimidation.

His role is narrow but important. Liu Bian’s death gives the anti-Dong-Zhuo side a stronger moral charge while making 汉献帝’s position more visibly exposed: Dong Zhuo can remove one Han imperial figure and govern through the other.
