刘表 / Liu Biao

Hanji 999 adds Liu Biao’s earlier court-support role before his own Jingzhou evaluation branch. 赵岐 persuades him to help 汉献帝’s return toward 洛阳, and the source says Liu Biao sends troops, supplies, and grain. This gives Liu Biao a practical stabilizing role in the same late-Han environment where other armed protectors exploit the court.

Hanji 1010 gives Liu Biao his own interpretive branch before the later 祢衡 and Wancheng episodes. After 张济 dies attacking 穰城 in 南阳郡, Liu Biao refuses congratulations, frames the death as a failure of hospitality rather than a victory, and absorbs Zhang Ji’s remaining troops through 丧礼化收编. The source reads this as real political skill: Liu Biao can hide force behind gentleness and turn danger into local consolidation.

The same episode makes Liu Biao’s strength bounded. He had stabilized 荆州 with local elites such as 蒯越 and 蔡瑁, treated commoners and scholars well, and respected ritual limits when warned not to use emperor-level court music. But 贾诩 judges that Liu Biao is better suited to peaceful high office or 保境安民式守成治理 than to disorder-era expansion, because he reads change slowly, lacks decisive action, and is too suspicious.

Hanji 1011 adds Liu Biao as the second holder in 祢衡’s death chain. 曹操 sends Mi Heng to him after the public drumming humiliation; Liu Biao first treats Mi Heng as a guest, then turns against him when Jingzhou elites such as 蒯越 and 蔡瑁 are offended and rumors say Mi Heng privately calls Liu Biao indecisive. The source reads Liu Biao’s decision to send Mi Heng to 黄祖 as a second-stage 借刀杀人 move.

刘表 / Liu Biao enters the wiki through Hanji 1012 as the regional power with whom 张绣 aligns after 张济 dies and Zhang Xiu takes over the troops. The episode uses Liu Biao as part of Zhang Xiu’s pre-surrender background before Cao Cao’s southern campaign.

Hanji 1013 adds that Zhang Xiu reconnects with Liu Biao after the Wancheng attack and subsequent defeat by 曹操. These episodes do not develop Liu Biao’s own policy; they use him as the fallback alignment that keeps Zhang Xiu from becoming simply a surrendered or defeated remnant.
