Overview

刘縯 / Liu Yan is synthesized as 刘秀’s elder brother and an early Gengshi-side figure whose military support, strategic caution, and restoration merit become politically dangerous. Hanji 663 now supplies the earliest layer: Nanyang and Xiajiang actors prefer Liu Yan as leader, but New Market and Pinglin commanders fear he will be hard to control and use 刘玄 instead. Hanji 664 introduces him through the Wan surrender and Cen Peng clemency branch. Hanji 665 then supplies the detailed killing: Gengshi-side commanders fear Liu Yan and Liu Xiu’s rising prestige, Liu Xuan accepts the danger frame, and Liu Yan is executed with Liu Ji after Zhu Wei and Li Yi press for quick action.

This page is deliberately disambiguated from 刘延 / Liu Yan (Dong Commandery), 阜陵王刘延, and 刘焉 / Liu Yan (late Han).

Current Profile

The sources give Liu Yan three bounded roles. First, Hanji 663 presents him as the stronger but more threatening leadership alternative during the Gengshi elevation debate. Liu Yan argues that claiming emperor too soon will create suspicion and internal Liu-family conflict while Wang Mang is still alive and Chimei remains unsettled; a royal title would be enough for command until the anti-Xin field is settled.

Second, after Wan surrenders, some Gengshi-side commanders want to kill 岑彭 because he had defended the city. Liu Yan argues that Cen Peng’s defense showed integrity and should be recognized rather than punished, leading to Cen Peng’s survival and title.

Third, Hanji 665 explains the death that Hanji 664 only previewed. Liu Xiu warns Liu Yan that Liu Xuan already treats the brothers as enemies, but Liu Yan does not withdraw or reduce exposure. Shentu Jian’s jade-ring signal, Fan Hong’s warning, Li Yi’s shift toward new-power circles, and Liu Ji’s refusal of appointment all precede the final pretext. When Liu Yan objects to Liu Ji’s execution, Zhu Wei and Li Yi advise Liu Xuan to bind and kill Liu Yan as well, and both are executed the same day.

Liu Yan’s profile therefore moves from a clemency judge at Wan to a case of post-restoration merit threat. His merit, prestige, and follower network make him useful against Xin, but after victory they make the Gengshi center treat him as a rival pole.

Key Characteristics

  • Elder brother of Liu Xiu in the early anti-Xin and Gengshi setting.
  • Preferred by Nanyang and Xiajiang actors but rejected by New Market and Pinglin commanders as too hard to control.
  • Strategic caution voice who argues against immediate imperial title before Wang Mang and Chimei are defeated.
  • Persuades the Gengshi side to spare Cen Peng after Wan surrenders.
  • Treats loyal defense and personal integrity as reasons for reuse rather than revenge.
  • High-prestige restorer whose merit becomes threatening to the Gengshi court after Kunyang.
  • Killed after Liu Ji’s refusal of appointment gives Liu Xuan’s faction a usable pretext.

Evidence

  • Leadership alternative: Hanji 663 says Nanyang elites and Xiajiang leader Wang Chang favor Liu Yan, while New Market and Pinglin commanders choose Liu Xuan because Liu Yan is hard to control.
  • Strategic title caution: Hanji 663 says Liu Yan recommends calling the leader king first and delaying imperial title until Wang Mang and Chimei are defeated.
  • Kinship and setting: Hanji 664 identifies Liu Yan as Liu Xiu’s elder brother in the Gengshi-era sequence.
  • Cen Peng clemency: Hanji 664 says Liu Yan argues that Cen Peng defended Wan with integrity and should be honored rather than killed.
  • Resulting title: Hanji 664 says Liu Xuan makes Cen Peng Guide Marquis after sparing him.
  • Death preview: Hanji 664 ends by previewing Liu Yan’s killing by his own side.
  • Suspicion field: Hanji 665 says New Market and Pinglin commanders fear Liu Yan and Liu Xiu’s rising prestige and secretly urge Liu Xuan to remove Liu Yan.
  • Warning and symbols: Hanji 665 says Liu Xiu warns Liu Yan, Shentu Jian presents a jade ring as a killing signal, and Fan Hong reports the danger to Liu Yan.
  • Execution pretext: Hanji 665 says Liu Yan defends Liu Ji, after which Zhu Wei and Li Yi advise Liu Xuan to arrest Liu Yan together with Liu Ji.
  • Immediate outcome: Hanji 665 says Liu Yan and Liu Ji are bound and executed the same day.

Qualifications

The current page still does not reconstruct Liu Yan’s full career before Wan or every faction around the Gengshi court. Hanji 663 supplies the early leadership alternative and delay advice but leaves Wang Chang, New Market/Pinglin/Xiajiang faction boundaries, and the exact decision mechanics source-scoped. Hanji 665 supplies the direct killing sequence but leaves Shentu Jian, Fan Hong, Liu Ji, exact command titles, and the internal New Market/Pinglin faction map source-scoped. Zhu Wei and Li Yi are linked through existing Guangwu-Gengshi normalization, but the source’s exact name forms remain ASR-sensitive.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 663 as the earliest layer: Liu Yan is the stronger but less controllable leadership alternative and argues for delaying imperial title.
  • Preserved Hanji 665 as the detailed Gengshi-court suspicion, Liu Ji pretext, Zhu Wei/Li Yi advice, and same-day execution sequence.
  • Reframed Liu Yan as a strategic caution voice, clemency actor at Wan, and high-merit restorer whose prestige becomes lethal after victory.

Relationships

  • 刘秀 - younger brother whose post-Kunyang rise frames the source’s cliffhanger.
  • 更始帝刘玄 - Gengshi ruler whose side first accepts Liu Yan’s recommendation to spare Cen Peng and then kills Liu Yan under factional suspicion.
  • 张卬 / Zhang Ang - pressure actor whose accession intervention overrides Liu Yan’s delay argument.
  • 岑彭 - defended Wan and survives because Liu Yan argues for recognizing integrity.
  • 昆阳之战 - battle context after which Liu Xiu’s growing power sets up Liu Yan’s death preview.
  • 朱鲔 - Gengshi-side figure normalized from the source’s Zhu Wei form and involved in urging Liu Yan’s execution.
  • 李轶 - Gengshi-side figure whose changed alignment and later advice help turn Liu Yan’s danger into execution.
  • 复国功臣威胁化 - concept relationship because Liu Yan’s restoration credit becomes a threat to the restored ruler’s coalition.
  • 复国王室名义合法性 - concept relationship because Liu Yan loses the accession choice to a more controllable Liu-lineage claimant.
  • 情绪不外露的战略纪律 - related later concept because Liu Yan’s death becomes a survival test for Liu Xiu in existing Liu Xiu evaluation material.
