平原王刘裔 / Liu Yi (Pingyuan Wang, late Han)
Updated · 1 episodes · 1 show · 1 source notes
Overview
平原王刘裔 / Liu Yi (Pingyuan Wang) enters the wiki through Hanji 794 as the royal relative around whom Emperor An’s fear of replacement crystallizes after Empress Dowager Deng delays returning power. He is distinct from Beixiang Hou Liu Yi / Liu Yi, the later Yan-backed child ruler.
Current Profile
Hanji 794 presents Liu Yi as a political possibility more than an active plotter. Empress Dowager Deng has brought sons of the Jibei and Hejian royal houses to the capital; Liu Yi, described as a handsome son of the Hejian king, is made heir to Pingyuan Huai Wang and kept in Luoyang. That visibility is enough for Wang Sheng and other palace actors to warn Emperor An that Deng may replace him.
After Deng dies, the accusation against the Deng household claims that Deng Kui, Deng Hong, and others asked Shangshu Deng Fang for old files on the deposed emperor so they could install Liu Yi. Emperor An responds by purging the Deng family and demoting Liu Yi from Pingyuan Wang to Duxiang Hou before sending him back to Hejian. Liu Yi’s survival strategy is withdrawal: he closes his doors, avoids visitors, and does not create a visible support network.
Key Characteristics
- Royal relative retained in Luoyang after Empress Dowager Deng summons candidates from collateral royal lines.
- Alleged alternative claimant whose existence feeds Emperor An’s fear of being deposed.
- Not shown as directing the anti-An accusation or the Deng household’s alleged plan.
- Demoted from Pingyuan Wang to Duxiang Hou and sent back to Hejian after the Deng purge begins.
- Survives by avoiding contact, closing his doors, and making himself politically unavailable.
- Disambiguated from the later Beixiang Hou Liu Yi because the title, succession context, and outcome differ.
Evidence
- Capital presence and selection risk: Hanji 794 says Empress Dowager Deng summons royal sons to Luoyang and keeps Liu Yi after making him heir to Pingyuan Huai Wang.
- Replacement rumor: Hanji 794 says Wang Sheng fears Emperor An may be replaced and that later accusations claim Deng relatives wanted to install Liu Yi.
- Demotion and removal: Hanji 794 says Liu Yi is changed to Duxiang Hou and sent back to Hejian on 121-05-17.
- Survival by withdrawal: Hanji 794 says Liu Yi preserves himself by closing his doors and seeing no guests.
Qualifications
This page is single-source and source-bounded. It does not prove whether Liu Yi knew of, supported, or benefited from any real Deng plan; the current evidence shows that he was treated as a plausible alternative around which slander and fear could organize. The route uses LiuYiPingyuanWangLateHan to avoid merging him with Beixiang Hou Liu Yi / Liu Yi or 刘翊 / Liu Yi.
What Changed
- Created this page to separate the Pingyuan Wang claimant in Hanji 794 from the later Beixiang Hou route.
- Added Liu Yi as a source-bounded example of survival through withdrawal after a succession rumor becomes lethal.
Relationships
- 和熹邓皇后 / Empress Dowager Deng (late Han) - regent whose retention of Liu Yi in Luoyang makes him politically legible.
- 汉安帝 / Emperor An of Han - ruler whose fear of replacement makes Liu Yi dangerous even without proven action.
- 邓氏 / Deng Family (An-era late Han) - accused outer-relative network allegedly tied to Liu Yi’s possible installation.
- 王圣 / Wang Sheng (late Han palace actor) - palace actor whose fear helps turn Liu Yi’s presence into slander against Deng.
- Heir / Claimant Support Threat Perception / 储君与宗室候选人威胁感 - succession-security pattern illustrated by Liu Yi’s role as alternative claimant.
- Procedureless Political Purge / 无程序政治清算 - purge pattern triggered when the alleged Liu Yi plan becomes a basis for family destruction.
- 北乡侯刘裔 / 刘懿 / Liu Yi (Beixiang Hou, late Han) - separate later Liu Yi route with a different title and succession crisis.
