刘璋 / Liu Zhang
Overview
刘璋 / Liu Zhang is 刘焉’s successor in 益州, holding a pragmatically accepted but fragmented provincial order whose internal integration weakness eventually constrains its external alliance choices.
Current Profile
Before succession, Liu Zhang is sent from the court side to persuade Liu Yan, who retains him in Yizhou. After Liu Yan’s other sons die or become unavailable, provincial figures accept the mild Liu Zhang and the court recognizes the outcome because it lacks practical leverage.
The inherited structure remains divided. 张鲁 breaks away in Hanzhong; 庞羲’s force and private recruitment produce suspicion; Dongzhou troops antagonize locals; 赵韪 turns resentment into revolt; and 甘宁 leaves after failed rebellion rather than becoming integrated capacity. Liu Zhang can reward 程畿’s loyal refusal, but that case does not repair the wider fragmentation.
Hanji 1109 adds the external consequence. Liu Zhang sends 张松 to 曹操 after Cao’s Jingzhou advance. When Zhang Song returns alienated and recommends breaking with Cao Cao in favor of 刘备, Liu Zhang accepts, showing how a weakly integrated province relies heavily on emissary judgment when stronger neighboring blocs are taking shape.
Key Characteristics
- Holds Yizhou through inherited autonomy rather than strong central appointment control.
- Inherits division among Dongzhou troops, older local elites, and Ba-Hanzhong frontier actors.
- Loses effective Hanzhong authority after the Zhang Lu rupture becomes familial and military.
- Responds to strong insiders through suspicion while struggling to restrain coercive troops.
- Can recognize loyal office behavior in individual cases without solving systemic fragmentation.
- Allows Zhang Song’s failed Cao mission to redirect Yizhou toward Liu Bei.
Evidence
- Provincial autonomy and succession: Hanji 959 shows Liu Zhang retained after a court mission; Hanji 981 shows provincial and court acceptance; Hanji 1055 shows him refusing a later court summons.
- Hanzhong and integration weakness: Hanji 1053 covers Zhang Lu’s rupture, Pang Xi’s recruitment, Dongzhou coercion, and Zhao Wei’s rebellion; Hanji 981 supplies Gan Ning’s exit.
- Loyalty recognition: Hanji 1055 reports Cheng Ji’s refusal of Pang Xi and Liu Zhang’s later promotion of Cheng Ji.
- Alliance pivot: Hanji 1109 has Liu Zhang send Zhang Song to Cao Cao and then accept Zhang Song’s recommendation to approach Liu Bei.
Qualifications
Liu Zhang’s mildness is an acceptance condition, not a complete psychological explanation. Zhang Lu, Pang Xi, Zhao Wei, Dongzhou troops, local elites, Cheng Ji, Gan Ning, and Zhang Song occupy different positions in a fragmented order. Hanji 1109’s alliance reversal is an added external symptom, not proof that one offended emissary alone determined Yizhou’s future.
What Changed
- Added Zhang Song’s Cao mission and the resulting Liu Bei alliance recommendation.
- Connected the external pivot to the already established internal integration weakness without reducing it to one cause.
Relationships
- 刘焉 - father whose autonomous provincial structure Liu Zhang inherits.
- 益州 - provincial base held outside strong court control.
- 张鲁 - Hanzhong actor whose break exposes weak frontier control.
- 庞羲 - old ally who becomes a suspected militarized insider.
- 赵韪 - succession supporter who later rebels.
- 程畿 - official whose loyal refusal Liu Zhang rewards.
- 甘宁 - local capacity lost from the provincial order.
- 张松 - emissary whose failed Cao mission redirects alliance advice.
- 曹操 - stronger power first approached and then rejected.
- 刘备 - alternative partner accepted on Zhang Song’s advice.
- 外来武装与本土豪族裂缝 - concept explaining a major structural pressure.
