Overview

楼兰 / Loulan Kingdom enters the wiki through Hanji 403-1 and Hanji 403-2 as a Western Han Western Regions polity caught between Western Han and Xiongnu pressure, then forcibly reordered by 傅介子’s assassination of Angui and installation of Wei Tuqi.

Current Profile

The current sources make Loulan a case of unstable frontier alignment. Hanji 403-1 shows Loulan leaning toward Xiongnu because Xiongnu pressure is nearer and more immediate, failing to report Xiongnu envoy movement, and cooperating in a field where Han envoys and goods have been attacked. Fu Jiezi’s first mission rebukes Loulan, extracts intelligence about Xiongnu envoys, and produces a short-term submission signal after he kills the envoys.

Hanji 403-2 shows why that first shock did not settle the problem. Fu returns with valuables and a targeted plan against Angui. After Angui is killed, Fu threatens the nobles with Han destruction if they resist, announces that Angui has been punished for crimes against Han, installs the Chang’an hostage Wei Tuqi, and says Loulan will now be called Shanshan. The new order is then reinforced through a small Yixun屯田 presence requested by Wei Tuqi.

The page keeps Loulan distinct from the existing late-Han Shanshan page. Here, “Shanshan” is the renamed Western Han Loulan polity at the moment of Han-backed succession; later Eastern Han Shanshan evidence belongs to a separate chronological page unless a future synthesis deliberately merges the histories.

Key Characteristics

  • Western Regions polity positioned between Han and Xiongnu power.
  • Presented as leaning toward Xiongnu because Xiongnu pressure is nearer and more immediate.
  • Supplies intelligence to Fu Jiezi during his first mission but later becomes the target of his second mission.
  • Ruled by Angui when Fu uses valuables and private-audience language to create an assassination opening.
  • Reordered after Angui’s death through Han-backed hostage succession, renaming as Shanshan, and a small Yixun屯田 detachment.
  • Case where coercive frontier deterrence succeeds immediately while leaving a serious trust-cost question.

Evidence

Position and pressure:

  • Hanji 403-1 says Loulan and other small Western Regions states are caught between Han and Xiongnu and often attach themselves to Xiongnu because of proximity and force.
  • Hanji 403-1 says such states had killed Han envoys and seized goods in connection with Xiongnu pressure.

First Fu Jiezi mission:

  • Hanji 403-1 says Fu rebukes the Loulan king for not reporting Xiongnu envoys passing through toward Western Regions states.
  • Hanji 403-1 says Loulan gives Fu intelligence that the envoys had left and might pass through Qiuci.
  • Hanji 403-1 says Loulan sends envoys to Han after Fu kills the Xiongnu envoys and says it will break with Xiongnu and submit.

Assassination and replacement:

  • Hanji 403-2 says Angui first receives Fu, then ignores him, and is drawn back by the promise and display of Han valuables.
  • Hanji 403-2 says Fu has Angui killed, displays the head before Loulan elites, and threatens that Han troops will destroy the country if anyone attacks.
  • Hanji 403-2 says Han installs Wei Tuqi, renames Loulan as Shanshan, and later sends a forty-person Yixun屯田 detachment to help stabilize the new king.

Qualifications

This page is bounded to Hanji 403-1 and Hanji 403-2. It does not reconstruct Loulan’s broader history, geography, internal factions, full later Shanshan identity, or every Han-Loulan interaction. The relation to ShanshanKingdomLateHan remains chronological and source-scoped rather than merged. Sima Guang’s criticism in Hanji 403-2 also means the assassination should not be recorded only as successful deterrence; it carries a future-submission credibility problem.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 403-2 as the assassination, hostage-succession, renaming, and Yixun屯田 continuation of Hanji 403-1’s Loulan instability.
  • Converted the previous cliffhanger into a fuller Western Han Loulan profile while keeping the late-Han Shanshan page separate.
  • Added Sima Guang’s trust-cost criticism as a qualification on the coercive settlement.
