吕不韦 / Lu Buwei

吕不韦 / Lu Buwei is only foreshadowed in 《资治通鉴·周纪》91丨触龙如何敲开守寡赵太后的门(1). When the episode notes that 秦昭襄王 makes 安国君柱 / 秦孝文王 crown prince and that Anguo Jun already has more than twenty sons, the host says Lu Buwei is getting close to the narrative.

《资治通鉴·周纪》97-3丨吕不韦:历史上风投第一人 turns that foreshadowing into Lu Buwei’s first developed action. The episode introduces him as a great merchant from Yangdi / 阳翟, but its functional emphasis is clearer: he has the commercial habit of seeing exchange value where other people see only present status.

In 邯郸, Lu Buwei hears that 异人 / 子楚 is a poor, mocked Qin hostage. Where others see a low-value royal grandson, Lu Buwei sees “奇货”: a claim whose current price is low but whose upside is huge if Qin succession can be rerouted. The episode therefore makes him the wiki’s source case for 政治风险投资.

His analysis depends on 子以母贵式继承杠杆. 安国君柱 / 秦孝文王 has many sons, while the favored 华阳夫人 has none. Lu Buwei’s strategy is to make Yiren valuable by connecting him to Huayang Furen’s maternal status rather than by treating his existing birth rank as fixed.

The episode frames Lu Buwei as a boundary-crossing figure. After 鲁仲连 represents a world of unpaid aristocratic honor, Lu Buwei pushes merchant calculation into politics and turns a state’s succession into a field for investment. The source also records the extreme personal cost side of this move: he gives his beloved woman to Yiren, and she later gives birth to 嬴政 / 秦始皇.

《资治通鉴·周纪》97-4丨史上为事业送老婆第一人 shows the execution of that investment. Lu Buwei splits resources between building Yiren’s reputation and buying access in Qin, then persuades 阳泉君 and 华阳夫人 by making their future insecurity explicit. The episode treats the carved jade tally as the decisive formalization: Yiren’s adoption becomes a written succession credential that protects Huayang Furen while elevating Yiren.

The same source also sharpens the cost and source-critical branches. It names 赵姬 as the woman Lu Buwei gives to Yiren, but treats the claim that 嬴政 / 秦始皇 was Lu Buwei’s biological son as doubtful rather than settled. Lu Buwei therefore remains a political investor whose personal sacrifice is central to the story, but not automatically the father of Qin Shi Huang in the wiki’s source-scoped reading.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》101-1|这位倒霉君王登基三天即猝死 adds Lu Buwei only through an unresolved suspicion around 秦孝文王’s sudden death. The episode notes that a long-lived Xiaowen Wang would have delayed or blocked Lu Buwei’s route to power through 子楚, which makes a murder theory narratively attractive. It also refuses to settle the matter, leaving the page’s claim at historical uncertainty rather than accusation.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》102-1|吕不韦是姜子牙后人? records the political payoff after Zichu’s accession. 秦庄襄王 appoints Lu Buwei as Qin chancellor, and the episode frames the appointment as a return for Lu Buwei’s earlier making of Zichu. It also gives Lu Buwei a lineage layer: 姜姓、吕氏、名不韦, from Puyang in Wey, and source-scopingly described as a twenty-third-generation descendant of 姜太公 / 姜子牙.

The same source moves Lu Buwei from succession investor to state executor. When 东周国 plots with lords against 秦国, Qin Zhuangxiang Wang sends Lu Buwei to destroy it and move the ruler to Yangren. Lu Buwei is then enfeoffed as Wenxin Hou with ten myriads of households around 洛邑 / Luoyang, making his earlier political investment visibly convert into office, military assignment, title, and fief.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》103-2|司马迁的“idol” 为何死于酒色 moves Lu Buwei into the post-Zhuangxiang power position. After 秦庄襄王 dies and thirteen-year-old 嬴政 / 秦始皇 succeeds, state affairs are decided by Wenxin Hou Lu Buwei, who is called “仲父.” The source emphasizes how unusual that is: Qin’s strongest figure is not royal kin or a queen-mother relative, but a former merchant with a very large household and guest network.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》104|阴谋失算让秦国版图又又又膨胀了 gives Lu Buwei a state-capacity role during Ying Zheng’s minority. The episode says 韩国’s attempt to use 郑国 and the 郑国渠 to exhaust Qin works because Lu Buwei already wants Guanzhong irrigation and grain security for future wars. The result extends his page beyond succession investment: he is also presented as a minister whose internal-strengthening agenda can absorb an enemy’s plot and turn it into Qin advantage.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》108-1|历史敢当面顶撞秦始皇第一人 adds the crisis consequence of Lu Buwei’s earlier intimate connection to 赵姬. The episode says Lu Buwei fears exposure and introduces 嫪毐 to Zhao Ji as a supposed eunuch. In this source, that attempted risk transfer becomes a larger court-political danger: Lao Ai gains title, retainers, and influence before rebelling as 嬴政 / 秦始皇 reaches personal rule.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》108-2|嫪毐的后宫秘史 specifies the mechanics of that risk transfer. Lu Buwei wants to end the dangerous relationship with Zhao Ji without angering her or exposing himself, so he lets rumors about Lao Ai create curiosity and then arranges a fake eunuch entry into the palace. The episode therefore turns Lu Buwei’s old pattern of strategic substitution into a failed exposure-management move: the substitute solves his immediate intimacy problem but creates a politically armed rival near the queen mother.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》108-3|皇太后和情夫嫪毐情色背后的启示 adds the consequence after Lao Ai falls. The episode says the investigation inevitably implicates Lu Buwei, and Ying Zheng originally wants to kill him while destroying the Lao Ai network. Lu Buwei survives because of old merit, strong support among those pleading for him, and Ying Zheng’s still-incomplete consolidation, but he loses the chancellorship and is sent out of the capital. This turns the Lao Ai crisis into 宫廷丑闻式收权: the exposure-management substitute becomes the scandal that gives Ying Zheng a path to remove Lu Buwei from central authority.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》110-1|李斯:米仓老鼠和下水道老鼠你怎么选? records the next political effect of that removal. Once Lu Buwei is no longer chancellor and has left the capital for his Luoyang fief, Qin royal-clan ministers use the moment to push the 逐客令 against foreign guests. Lu Buwei’s foreign origin, high office, and large retainer world therefore become part of the atmosphere in which outside talent can be recast as infiltration.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》110-2|秦始皇的CP为何被驱逐出国 briefly backfills Lu Buwei’s role in 李斯’s rise: Li Si approaches him as the route toward 嬴政 / 秦始皇, and Lu Buwei eventually recommends Li Si into office as a郎官. The same episode’s ending turns forward to Lu Buwei’s final crisis, saying his incomplete retreat will let Ying Zheng force his death by a short letter.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》111-2|我与吕不韦的隔空对话 completes that final crisis. In the source, Lu Buwei’s Luoyang retirement remains politically unsafe because foreign envoys still visit him, turning reputation and old networks into evidence that he has not truly disappeared. Ying Zheng’s letter strips away the language that once protected him - merit, kinship, and “仲父” - and orders a family move to Shu. The episode reads Lu Buwei’s poisoned-wine suicide in 235 BCE as the last calculation of an actor trapped by residual power: he cannot return, flight would endanger his family, and obedience to the relocation order may only postpone execution.
